Ok, same as all of you guys, my 97 grand prix w/ 95+ thousand miles on it has been makin the annoying noise. But, and this is just a huge if, my mom has another car, automatic, dodge avenger and it had a whine that we had solved by a mechanic, and the conclusion was reached that the synchros closest the the engine, (lower gears (?)) wear making a whining noise. I was wondering if the same thing could be with the grand prix whines we are all experiencing. I dont like whining kids, or women, and i sure as hell dont want a whining car. haha. anyways, hope that sparks some initiative in those minds of yours guys.

Re: I hear this whine in many GP GT's...Is it normal?
this thread was five months old , most people might start a new one
![]() it could be any of the problems listed in the above posts, but in all likelyhood if you drive a gtp it is just supercharger whine. Learn to love it, it goes hand in hand with horsepower

Re: I hear this whine in many GP GT's...Is it normal?
My 97 had that noise after I took it in for a oil change at a GM dealer. Turned out to be the p/s pump. It seemed the dealer never checked it, enless you asked. After I filled it, the sound went away. Good luck.

Re: I hear this whine in many GP GT's...Is it normal?
my money is on your belt tensioner. Here's a quick test. Spray the center of the tensioner pulley with wd-40 or other spray lube. start the car, if the noise goes away, then gradually comes back, you have a bad tensioner pulley. IF it doesn't change a bit, then you have a p/st pump problem.

Re: I hear this whine in many GP GT's...Is it normal?
i'll take that money cause it's not the tensioner. i tried that spray test ever since i got my gp 6 months ago and i can tell you it's not the belt, a/c, w/p, tensioner, or alt pulley. its that p/s. i just tell everyone theres a supercharger there somewhere.

Re: I hear this whine in many GP GT's...Is it normal?
Funny. I thought that it was the mechanicals warming up. Put you know, now that I've put 20K on it, that whine in there too. I thought that it was the transmission. But then again, I might have a different problem: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...ght=trans+leak

all 3800 series engines have a humm from the tranny when cold, something in there has to warm up. my 91 buick regal(series I) does it, dad's 04 gt(series III) does it and my 03 gt(series II) does it.. the older your fluid is, the longer you hear the noise. This is just my observation tho maybe I just have fluke cars.

Last night I noticed that my 2000 GP GT 3.8L was making a higher pitch rev noise at high speeds (60 or above) and then I saw that the tach shows rpm at 3000-3200 instead of the normal 2000-2500. My temp gauge runs a little higher than usual. It shows to be around 190 instead of the usual 175 or so- maybe this is related to the fact that the Overdrive is not kicking in. I first thought that my thermostat was going bad (maybe sticking), but I get plenty of heat inside my car, so maybe it's the transmission problem.
Here's how I verified this: A good test for overdrive is to put the car in 3rd gear. Get up to highway speed (50-60mph), turn on cruise control, and then push the shifter into D. If the car does not change gears (like my car) then the Overdrive is not moving from 3rd to 4th gear. This site does a good job explaining the Transmission converter clutch. http://tech.oldsgmail.com/trans_TCC.html It looks like Overdrive is controlled by the solenoid that gets a signal from the ECM to make the gear shift from 3rd to 4th. There are 2 wires that go to the solenoid- 1 for the 3rd gear and the other for 4th. Thanks to everyone for their information in the posts..... |

Re: I hear this whine in many GP GT's...Is it normal?
yeah, i thought i was alone on this but looks to me liek im not. My 98 GT with 90K miles only makes tha sound really loud as im taking turns and it increases with acceleration, almost like it boggs down a bit as im turning... The throttle gets "mushy" a notch, not horrible but like if you been driving the car you would notice it.

simple solution pull the belts off and listen for whine after engine is started.. These trannies whine pretty loud also which rise and fall with rpms.

Ive had this same problem. It doesnt seem to be there anymore since Ive changed these to things. I changed the water pump and also I had cold air intake and put the stocker back on and it seems to be working and sounds fine. Hope this helps

Re: I hear this whine in many GP GT's...Is it normal?
my noise is on top, and it went away when I hit the pulley with wd40. The noise came back though. So thats why I'm sure that its my alternator.
