Ohhhh. Thank you guys for those great works.
Make me really happy.
Some delay because I work and another project as I say, so the next update will be after some time.

I started to work the main frame and the front details but the progress is so slow.
I think the first update on this, will be a little boring but as I say, I 'll try my best.

And a question...
In the side of the car, on the aluminium frame you can see the numbers and some decals.

So what can I do with that?
I plan to paint the the aluminium frame because the hiro 's metal casting is poor in some areas. So I 'll primed and paint it. What color can I use (alclad?). Then can I put the decals on alclad an I clear coat them? Just to put the decals without clear coat on the frame? What do you think.

Thank for your time...

In that picture it looks painted silver, not bare metal. I would use Alclad or Model Master Metalizer Aluminum

Re: Ferrari 312PB 1972 Nurburgring - MFH 1/24

I suppose clear coating over the Alclad is not the most desirable option because although it will give a good surface for the decals to adhere to, it may spoil the effect of the Alclad?

I might consider 2 options (or a combination of both):
  1. localized application of Johnson's Klear (or whatever it is called nowadays) where you want to apply the decals

  2. in order to make sure the decls adhere well without a clear coat over them, trim well to minimize excess carrier film and then when applying use a very thin white glue. when this dries out it should hold the decals well and any excess can be cleared off with a cotton bud and water.

I would definitely try with scrap decals first though!

just some thoughts - no promises

Re: Ferrari 312PB 1972 Nurburgring - MFH 1/24

Hi george,
As hemi killer already wrote, the surface of that particular car appears to be flat, like Tamiya flat aluminium XF16.
BUT the most important question is: Does that particular picture / car (actually seems to be shot at Spa Francorchamps nowadays while a classic meeting or oldtimer GP) show the ORIGINAL car in ORIGINAL condition OR is it restored?
I have the same "difficulties" with my current project, the Porsche 917LH. There are lot of pics showing restored ones and original ones..........if you are going for a "authentic" build, i suggest you to "be careful with pictures like these". It's also about the decals / stickers.
That's no look of 1972-car (for sure it is a real 312PB). Try to catch that mood / feeling of the time you want your miniature to take place in.
Don't you have some more pictures showing the car while the depending race at the Nürburgring in 1972?

All the best!!

Yours
Jochen

Re: Ferrari 312PB 1972 Nurburgring - MFH 1/24

Jochen has very good advice.

One color I have played with recently is Alclad Airframe Aluminum. It is like polished aluminum, but I like it better for replicating bare metal for stuff like this. Alclad Polished Aluminum to me is more similar to chrome, the Airframe Aluminum looks more like real polished aluminum.

What base coat are you using on Airframe Aluminium? Gloss black or semi or mat back? Maybe I 'll give it a try...

Klutz, very useful tips. I don't decide yet because maybe is a little problem- inaccuracy, to represent a shiny red body with polished decals on it, with some none clear coated and not polished decals on the bottom side of the same car.

For sure, I need to make some tests.
Any other suggestion is always very welcome.

Thank you again

Actually it works great with very light coats over polished white plastic. It will work well over gloss black, but it will darken it a bit, but that may be just what you need for your car.

I have tried over primer too, but it's more flat. Any smooth glossy surface will be fine. I am not sure how it would react with resin directly, so it may be safer to do the primer/black base/Alclad.

Re: Ferrari 312PB 1972 Nurburgring - MFH 1/24

I googled around over the last weekend and there are some pics showing the depending 1972-Nürburgring-car(s), but it's hard to imagine the surface / the appearance of that area......unfortunately.

Now here's a pic from 1972, showing the Andretti / Ickx - 312PB at Sebring.

SEEMS to be a bare metal surface, like at old jet-planes?!

When you now think of (brake-)dust, dirt, hot air and things like that covering that metal-area you might get that flatened look.

This is just my opinion.

I know, you'll give it more than justice anyway!!!! However.
Keep it up, "do what YOUR feelings, heart and mind tells you"!

Yours
Jochen
