Sure they meet the emission standards - but because they're classified as "heavy trucks" (as is anything over 6,000 lbs) they only have to meet a DIFFERENT standard, which allows up to 3x as much pollution as from a regular car or light truck.

This means the manufacturers are actually rewarded for making the cars heavier, because then they have less stringent emissions standards to meet.

The gov'm't is currently phasing in new emissions standards that would require heavy trucks and SUVs to pollute much less, starting in 2004. Funny, that's also when the Excursion disappears.

Its the old worn out cars that have been on the road for twenty years that spew ten times the stink that SUVs do. Its not just how much it spits out when its new, its how bad they get from poor maintenance that causes more problems. In other words its not all about MPG - or MPK for you "other guys" but about the engines efficiency.

Note: I know that Global Warming is BS but that doesn't mean that I want the fumes of inneficient engines to billow out more smog.

MISUNDERSTANDING

We need to clarify exactly WHAT we're talking about when we say "SUV":

My Suburban is registed as a station wagon

It is not over 6,000 lbs & meets the same emissions standards as the pickup trucks do (same engine).

It emits less than 1/2 the pollutants the 1982 Mercedes 380SL I used to mob around in.

It handles on par or better than a Chevy Cavalier.

SOOOooo... As I said before, I'm glad to see the Excursion go:sun: Before I bought the Sub I test-drove Ford's products. Both the Excursion & the Expedition lived up to the SUV stigma (IMHO).

And actually I think any truck under a 1-ton or maybe 3/4 ton is considered a light truck. And whats more dangerous, an SUV or one of those older cars, thats built out of solid steel? I'm willing to be you're more likely to die in a car crash from getting hit by one of those steel machines, then a fiberglass and plastic SUV.

Actually it has less to do with how the other car crumples, and more to do with the bumper heights. Currently cars are designed to best absorb impact delivered at the height of their own bumper (this includes the sides as well as the front and back of the car) and when force is delivered above that level, it can be lethal to the passengers.

If that impact is delivered higher, especially in a side-impact or "T-bone" collision, the force can be lethal. The front of the SUV bypasses the reinforcement altogether, and sometimes (if the SUV is "jacked up") the SUV enters the car through the window, hitting driver and passengers directly in the chest and head.

From this site: http://search.netscape.com/redir.adp...vocationType=-

The proposals are meant to address a central problem with sport utility vehicles and pickups. When such vehicles hit a car from the side, an occupant of the car has 29 times the chance of dying of a person in the sport utility vehicle or truck, Dr. Runge has said. When a car hits a light truck from the side, occupants of both vehicles have an even chance of dying.

New data from the traffic safety agency further illustrates the problem. For every 100,000 crashes involving a large pickup truck and another vehicle, there are 293 deaths in the other vehicle. For S.U.V.'s there are 205 deaths in the other vehicle.

By comparison, there are only 104 such deaths in the second vehicle when it is in a collision with a minivan; they are designed more like cars and ride lower to the ground than most S.U.V.'s and pickups. The number falls to 77 when a midsize car collides with another vehicle.

Link didn't work so I don't know where you got the numbers from so I don't know how credible they are. Well I guess I'm just at as much risk as any body driving a car if a slightly jacked up truck t-bones me since my truck is quite low. But anyways the new cars are being built strong in the door and side panel regions. And a lot of the new SUV's are coming built with a lower front bumper for just that reason. I guess it doesn't really bother me if people dislike or what I see here, hate them, it just bugs me that people bitch about shit way too damn much and need to just accept things the way they are and realize life isn't always fair and we don't all get what we want.

Couldn't find that site, so here's a new one with same stats:

About SUV emissions...

I think the biggest reason people are annoyed by SUVs now is lack of mudflaps. Older SUVs have them, but I haven't seen a single SUV produced during this century so far that has them!!! This means that all sorts of road crap gets flung up onto other cars... It's almost as if engineers designed SUVs to be as annoying and inconsiderate as a vehicle can be!
