I knew my original response would be misinterpreted. I was trying to convey one would think,at first impression, if you dug a hole where you live you would expect to end up in the same hemisphere. But since the Earth is not flat and you dug down you would end up opposite of the place you started from on the other hemisphere. It even says in the text on the page with the map not to compare it to the Google Map. And no, I'm not like everyone else. I can read a map and do quite well, thank you. I even had a cartography class in college way back when.

The earth isn't round. Centrifugal force from spinning makes the center stick out further, which sucks down the poles. We're more of an oval than a circle.
Actually the correct term to use to describe the shape of the Earth is oblate spheroid.

That is true, but you used the term "circle", implying that the discussion was about Earth's 2 dimensional appearance.... in which case it is more like an oval than a circle. If you had used the correct terminology in your original post, I would have known that indeed we were referring to Earth's 3 dimensional appearance, and my reply would have been different.

On the flip side, anyone floating around in the Indian Ocean who digs there way here will end up in a Starbucks.

7th grade? Damn, now I know the educational system in this country is going downhill. I learned that term back in 5th grade in 1976. I even wonder if that term is even tossed around in science/Earth Science anymore in grade school?

Re: Where are you on the other side of the world

I came out near Malaga in Spain.

Not a bad place to emerge, it was walking distance to a highway.

I came out near a little village in Spain called Correlos, right next to a highway. Awesome.

Re: Where are you on the other side of the world

Another swimmer here. Although I'd be better off to dig from where I used to live in PA than I am to dig from where I'm at in TN. Granted, hundreds of miles swimming in the ocean doesn't put me in a good place to arrive regardless.

When you get to the core, put a little flag by your tunnel. I'll just dig half way, and jump into the tunnel that you dug to go the rest of the way. I've always wanted to see where they filmed Xena Warrior Princess at... best show eva!
