Problem with 1981 Caprice.

My old caprice used to do odd electrical things!? I would drive along ok then the stereo would go off? Or the lights would flash? If I shifted into R everything would go off, then if I shifted to D everthing would come on again? Weird hey? Turned out to be the battery to body earth was broken and the body was earthing through the shifter linkage! Replaced it with an old battery cable and it was ok again. Worth checking if you're car's doing funky weird spooky stuff with electrics. Things like headlights will draw a lot of amps so the resistance will be all f**ked up with just shifter linkage earthing. Have a look and good luck!
