If you get hit from the sides, it helps and if you get t boned usually cars roll over..... so this would help greatly..... but if they hit you hard enough for you to roll over, your probably dead from the impact......

The purpose of the ROLL BAR is incase your car ROLLS OVER the roof won't cave in and crush you to death.

BE CAREFUL with your roll cage.
Yes they will help you in case of a roll over and a side impact if you add the door bars etc (Depends if you get a roll bar -from backs of front seats back to rear - or a full cage including door bars and A-pillars etc) BUT you have added a new risk to your car - especially with a full cage or anything that extends beyond the front seating area. Cages are generally used with Helmets. Why? Because your noggin on impact isn't designed to smash into metal bars around your head. You can pad the bars but it is still a more risk. How much I don't know. Not sure how well the pads protect. You notice that even in a race car with helmeted drivers they pad the bars... If people ride in the back seat they are at risk no matter if it is a bar or cage. I've know track junkies with bars that require anyone riding in the back seat (rare for them) to wear a helmet at all times. Plus any other body parts into crashing into cross members can't be good. Just more very hard surfaces there than before. Something to think about. Be safe. Brad p.s. As a side note...I did see a civic like vehicle here around dallas. It was red and had a FULL yellow EXTERNAL cage. Now there is something you don't see every day! |

Also while I am on a safety kick....Harnesses. If you are worried about roofs caving in (not sure on the stats of how often they fail in a roll-over) think about this. Harnesses are designed to hold you tightly to the seat and not allow you to slouch (submarine) or slide down in the event of a roll-over like stock seatbelts. Sooooo...if you roof caves in and you are wearing a harness that is keeping you upright (using a harness bar with no roll cage)....something has to give right? Goodbye head - RIP.
There are some (1 that I know of from Schroth - BMW application not sure about others) 4 point harnesses that do meet DOT approval as they have a section that tears away in an accident that extends the harness length allowing you to slide to the side in one direction. But otherwise...becare when installing these "safety" items that you realize all the implications and that these parts and pieces of systems may actually cause you greater injury. Sorry...I'll try to quit channeling my parents. Brad |

Bolt ins are fine. In some racing classes they make you bolt rather than weld to keep people from using them as chassis stiffeners.
You'll want to pad anywhere a head or other body part can impact the cage. If you hit it you don't want it to be any worse than hitting any other part of the inside of your car. Having rolled a car before I can attest to the fact it would have been nice for the roof to have stayed up when my side of the vehicle came in. I wasn't hurt bad. My brother was ejected and got a small cut on his thumb....that's all. Rollovers are very surviveable. Just wear your seatbelt. I have Schroths in my car. Very nice. |

You don't need a roll bar for a 4 point harness to be good. See this example of my "office".
