Re: What is the best way to stop people from stealing cars?

thak an extention cord and cut the female end off.
strip back the black wire and hook the hot (black) wire to the body of the car. When someone grabs the door handel, ZAP, 120 volts.
Just dont forget to un-plug it for your self.

Re: What is the best way to stop people from stealing cars?

120 volts doesn't hurt that bad actually. I've been hit by it several times, and the jolt isn't bad enough to make me unplug what I'm working on. I think the only way to keep people from stealing cars is to have the same penalty as they had in the old west for stealing horses.

There is no way to keep someone from stealing cars. You can slow them down with various immobilizer techniques (fuel or spark kill), steering wheel locks, flamethrowers, etc. Even with the best systems, all you need is a tow truck. Older ones are cheap, and if you're in a tow truck hooking up to a car a cop could drive right past and not suspect a thing.

Re: What is the best way to stop people from stealing cars?

I was thinking maybe there was a high tech solution - a chip that would make recovery immediate and inevitable. Such devices would put the car jackers out of business - permanently. What about OnStar?
Do any of the the factoryinstalled GPS systems have anti-theft mechanisms? They should.

Lock the car in a secure garage... and don't leave stuff in it.

I dunno sounds far too practical and simple...

Oh, you mean something like LoJack? That would be great!
http://lojack.com/

That or you could move way out into the sticks where the people shoot first and ask questions later.

Re: What is the best way to stop people from stealing cars?

we have gps car tracking over here, cunningly enough called a Tracker. both my mum's car and neighbour's RS4 have trackers fitted.

i believe the record for the fastest recovery from a stolen car with a tracker is 45 seconds or something. they're pretty good, and over here drop your isurance costs a lot.

There are systems that track the car. All a theif has to do is disconnect the battery and touch the cables together. Cuts power to the unit, and touching the cables would short out any internal power backup. From there hook it on the back of a wrecker or winch it onto a trailer.

Fourtunately, most thieves are stupid.

Re: What is the best way to stop people from stealing cars?

the Tracker systems we have here are like alarm systems, they have their own battery, and use very little power.

it's hard enough to even find them let alone disconnect them.

Re: What is the best way to stop people from stealing cars?

I found leaving a 6' python on the front seat general tends to deter thieves. Left a bucket of $20 on the dash for a week. No problems. Actually i read a story in Hot Rod magazine awhile back about a fuel kill switch that you hide under the dash, hit the button, car goes maybe a mile and dies. Good to recover cars if they get jacked.

LoJack will help you get it back if stolen http://lojack.com/ but your question was "What is the best way to stop people from stealing cars?" and I'd have to say sleep in the back seat with a 12 guage shotgun handy.

A friend of mine in California had one of those on his Porshe Targa. It was stolen by a pro who, according to the police, tossed a can of gasoline inside and lit it up after it quit to eliminate all finger prints and DNA evidence. The car was totaled but he did get it back.

Re: What is the best way to stop people from stealing cars?

If you rigged up something extreme (such as a very very high electric shock) to your car and someone tried to break in, and it killed them, would you be at a fault by law? If not, I would not mind that. I could care less what happens to thieves. I wish the people who broke into my car would have been cut open and thrown into a salt bin.
