Re: 1-24 MFH Aston Martin DB-R 9 Silverstone 05

quick update

The body is finally ready for a layer of white primer followed by the green (I already sprayed the white so tomorrow might be the day for the green ) I'm also ready with the louvers, I "drilled" some holes (0,3mm) where the screws should be. I will probably add some PE parts later...

And one shot of the new/re-worked PE Part on the front

And another tip for you Klutz and everyone else who got the kit, you have to sand the taillights with atleast 1000# sandpaper (maybe 2000 would be even better) because even if they look nice right out of the box, they are horrible if you just paint them. Take a close look at the "inside" of the part where the PE part should be placed, that's how rough the surface is right out of the box
Don't ask how I noticed that but spraying it the second time worked great
I used Alcald II clear red which is really good and I will later clear coat it because there is no clear part that covers it...

And some of the CF work which still needs a layer clear coat. Not the best pic but you get the idea. I mostly used F1 Specialties CF decals and SMS high tech decals (right part). I have to say the SMS decals + Mirco Sol/Set are way better if it comes to complex/irregular surfaces, simply the best stuff out there. But since I really like the look of the F1 Specialties decals I had to use them...

And one last pic, chassis painted semi gloss black then masked off to spray some aluminium color...

I already done that and started detailing it with CF Decals, Bare Metal Foil etc. but I didn't take any pics yet because it's simply to late and I need to go to bed now

lol sorry I meant "day" not "today"...

next quick update
sorry the body is not green yet but I made some more progress on the interior next pic shows the last testfit, let's hope it all will fit just as well after painting...

pics of the chassis, I added BareMetal Foil followed by testor's dullcoat to take away some of the shine + SMS CF Decals

Most of the CF work will be hidden after the body is on but it nonetheless it's there...

The two boxes are sligthly oversized or the cockpit is just to small
Normally there should be way more room for wires etc... but even if there's no room I will add wires later.

Damn you are quick

Saint, errr... what seat belts do you have planned for this?
My refs show a 5 point set-up but I'm not seeing holes in your seat for that. Am I missing something? I hope not 'cos I already drilled them out on my seat

I'm on vacation that's why I can build at all
Yes you're right, my refs show it too but I didn't work on the seat yet. Only sprayed primer to see how much putty I need...

Re: 1-24 MFH Aston Martin DB-R 9 Silverstone 05

Ok good news I painted the Aston with the Zero Paints green today. Bad news I almost screwed it up... because I dropped the body during painting and that left some nice scratches on the body
But since the Zero paints dry extremly fast I just waited couple hours, sanded the bad spots and repainted it. (at 1:1 cars this is called "smart repair" ) Below are two pics where I already removed the scratches (one on the roof and two around the rear window)...

Sorry for the bad pics I took them under a lamp and didn't adjust the camera...

Impressions about the Zero Paint, looks like a really good match but I got a rather dissapointing experiance using them... but that was only because it wasn't thinned enough what made me thinking, I got some more Zero paints which are perfectly thinned and the bottles are full. But not the Aston paint...

that's a) because I bought it last year and back then Steve didn't supply them at 60ml or b) they forgot to add thinner? The bottle looks like 2/3 full and the 1/3 left could be the thinner...
My airbrush even clogged up without adding additional thinner...

I also used Zero's semi gloss black so far and that is just perfect. Eitherway it's a great color and as soon as the clear is on it will look just great!

great 'smart repair' Saint :-), CF work is so neat too.

Body looks really nice and Im sure you won't be disappointed with the finish. I will definately be using Zero Paints again without doubt. How are you finding the SMS CF decals? I havent used these yet but I have a full template set for the F2001 and just wondered how they compare to Modelers & Studio 27?

... and get your MP4/6 finished finished too... the suspense is killing me! ;-)

The SMS CF decals are the best if you have really complex parts. If you use Micro Sol/Set you can get them in almost every shape you want. So if you like the look they are probably the best out there. But with this build I also tried F1 Specialties for the first time which are great too. They are way thicker and won't conform as easy to irregular surfaces but the look is really great so you have to decide what's more important for you

Modeler's are almost the same as F1Specialties (in look and working with them). I actually never used S27 but I got some maybe I try them on the Aston too if I find a good place for them.

Yes the MP 4/6, to be honest I really want to get back to it since I haven't done much since the last update...
Remember the dry transfer stickers JayKay showed on his 1/20 McLaren (the tiny little labels at the cockpit) we made some in 1/12 and I have some more things to come... opcorn:
I hope to finish the Aston soon and then I will focus on the McLaren again Stevenski aka Klutz taught me some things about casting, I am sure I can use them for that project too

But there's also a little time problem because this week I was on vacation but next week starts work again and if that wasn't enough school too. So I pretty much don't have time for anything...

That was on of the 1st version of the paints looking at the label, and only 40ml, being pre-thinned the thinners will evaporate over time, if you need a replacement drop me a PM or email.

Arrgh! I looked at mine and the situation is even worse I have about 1cm left at the bottom of the bottle
I also bought it just when it was released and it has been stored on 2 plastic bags to try an d prevent just this happening

Steve, am I OK to just add thinners to what's left in the bottle or would you recommend buying a new bottle?

Good to see you stopping by Steve

Yes that's what I would like to know too, I mean I added thinner and it worked quite well so it's probably ok but just to be sure it would be good to know!? Especially when I look at my other Zero bottles.

It looks like the plastic bottles don't seal perfectly because the 2k hardener dries out once opened luckily only the "top layer" and the rest is ok... no offense Steve because your paint is really awesome (see below ) but it's good to talk about these things!

OK back to topic, Body sprayed with Aston Martin Racing Green... no clear yet hence the matt/semi gloss finish...

Looks really good with the paint on. Will you apply the decals first then clear or put a few coats of clear on then the decals and some more clear?
