Re: Addicted to Metal

raysoh is right about exodus, you'd like 'em. Also, check out Annihilator, Jeff Waters is a great thrash guitarrist.

As for In Flames, imo, Whoracle was the album to listen to. Really, Clayman was the last album i liked. Not to say they got worse, they are still amazing band, but i've lost taste for them, they've moved in a direction i'm not diggin.

also, WOW!! Melechesh is FUCKING GREAT!! its more technical/melodic Black Metal, but they are great.

Umm, as for Slipknot, i was never a fan. In high school, my friends would show me songs like "wait and bleed" and i'd think, "wow, this is metal? ...it sucks." I don't like their sound, their image, or their presence. I do hear they put on a great show, but then, there are a few bands who don't these days. Like slipknot, i have no love for bands like Avenged Sevenfold, Trivium, Shadows Fall, Norma Jean, Hatebreed... Lamb of God is good, i can't get into 'em. They need Phil Anselmo on Vocals. Speaking of, check out the band Down.

If you don't know 'em already, check out classic metal bands like Manowar, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, and Blind Guardian. Its a different sound, but who knows, you might like it. Some of it is, won't lie, bery cheesey, like kinda nerdy (singin' about dungeons and dragons, lord of the rings, etc.) but fun none the less.

Re: Addicted to Metal

Alright now that I have my iPod in front of me, check out these bands:
3 Inches of Blood (Power metal, they have a new album out, it's solid)
Alabama Thunderpussy (Southern rocky, really catchy)
Amon Amarth (Viking death metal)
Amorphis (Hard to classify...ambient metal? Unique...check it out)
Artimus Pyledriver (Southern rock...awesome)
At the Gates (Founders of grind...great band)
Black Label Society (The lead singer/guitarist is the lead guitarist for Ozzy...mix this with a bit of a souther twang, and you have BLS)
Blind Guardian (Thrashy power metal...their latest album is great)
Carcass (Helped found the grind movement)
Children of Bodom (Thrashy/poppy Finnish metal band...listen to their older stuff first)
Chimaira (Newer thrashy band, can be lumped in with Lamb of God and Devildriver...I'm a bit partial here because they're from my hometown)
Daath (Technical death metal band)
Dark Tranquility (Swedish melo-death metal)
Death (Technical death metal...any album is gold)
Death Angel (California thrash)
Demiricous (New band, heavy Slayer influence)
DevilDriver (Nu-thrash, similar to LOG and Chimaira)
Dew-Scented (German thrash, Kreator influence)
Exodus (Original thrash band)
Fear Factory (Industrial metal)
God Dethroned (Awesome European thrash band)
Gojira (Really weird, yet awesome, technical metal band from France)
The Haunted (Swedish metal, a couple guys from At the Gates play for 'em)
Iced Earth (Power metal to the extreme)
Impious (Straight up death metal)
In Flames (Swedish death metal...listen to their older stuff)
Into Eternity (Progressive metal...any album is solid)
Iron Maiden (English power metal)
Judas Priest (One of the founding metal bands)
Kreator (As previously mentioned, great German thrash band)
Lamb of God (Nu-thrash)
Machine Head (Thrashy type band, although they go accross a few genres...check out Burn My Eyes, Through the Ashes of Empires and The Blackening)
Mastodon (Progressive metal)
Megadeth (One of the first thrash bands)
Melechesh (Look at the other dude's description)
Morbid Angel (One of the original death metal bands)
Motorhead (Come on...it's Motorhead)
Municipal Waste (Newer thrash band, but they don't really fall into the same category as LOG and the rest)
Nevermore (Amazing)
Opeth (Really technical melo-death type band)
Overkill (Old thrash band)
Pantera (Needs no explanation)
Sadus (Thrashtastic)
Sanctity (Nu-thrashy, but with clean vocals)
Saxon (Power metal)
Scar Symmetry (Swedish melo-death, similar to Soilwork)
Sepultura (Brazilian thrash, see also: Soulfly)
Shadows Fall (Nu-thrash...their lead guitarist is awesome)
Slayer (Thrash...'nuff said)
Sodom (Thrashtastic)
Soilwork (Swedish melo-death)
Strapping Young Lad (Insane industrial-death metal...Devin Townsend is the man)
Testament (Old thrash band)
This Ending (Newer death metal band)
Threat Signal (Already discussed in this thread)
Trivium (Nu-thrash, but again with clean vocals)
Unleashed (Death metal)

Again, any or all can be provided upon request. Enjoy!

Re: Addicted to Metal

^Nice list. Definitely check out BLS, you'd like it.

just some additions to that, and all previously listed bands, that you should really check out:

Deep Purple (classic heavy-metal)
Dio (the never-dying demon of Sabbath)
Dream Theater (Progressive Metal Kings)
Kyuss (Stoner Metal... disbanded, and now Queens of the Stone Age)
Primus (Funk-Metal)
Venom (New Wave of British Heavy Metal, with thrashy rhythm and black-metal lyrics)

Re: Addicted to Metal

If you find lamb of god etc heavy, nile, cryptopsy, dying fetus, and necrophagist will crush your skull. Might be too early to get into that stuff, but keep those names at the back of your head. One fine day, you will listen to them, and just go "WHOA".

off topic: Nile has released a new album! Go check it out

Re: Addicted to Metal

I used to go see Nile when they were nobody's starting out playing at Zapata's before it was changed to the first Ground Zero behind the police station. Now Ground Zero is on Howard Street and I've seen Nile there among many other bands. Nile is pretty damn old now though. I remember rocking their cassettes back in like 95' or something... haha.

93 rollaracer has a good list.
I used to get into Pantera, Six Feet Under, Korn (when they were actually good like 10-13 years ago), Obituary, Slayer, Deicide, etc. etc.

Re: Addicted to Metal

Is Chief still doing vocals for Nile? I used to like the foot pedal effects the stringy long haired lead guitarist used to play. It's been awhile since I've seen them though...
EDIT: I haven't listened to any of the last 6 Nile albums... Haha.

Re: Addicted to Metal

I left some of the heavier death metal out of there so the beginners can get their feet wet with this stuff before we crush their skulls.

On the subject of Nile, they're coming to town Thursday and I will be there headbanging along. Should be a good time.

Korn is still good, they've just "evolved" a bit. They are, however, not as good as they were. A lot of people criticized Issues but that album was a kickass album, Untouchables had some really good ones on it, so did See You On The Other Side. Take A Look In The Mirror was kind of shitty I thought, especially the song with Nas. Their new cd is still in the mail, should be here tomorrow and I'll give it a listen but I'm not expecting anything too great. I just wish J. Davis would do stuff on his own and for the band not to care so much about selling cds...I think they're putting too much effort into them. They have enough talent their own they don't need help from other bands(NIN). Then again I'm a die hard Korn fan and don't care what their sound is now days, I'll like them no matter what.

On a side note: 93 rollaracer does have good taste in metal.

Heh...and that's not nearly half of the metal collection. That's just the "So you want to get into metal..." list.

Re: Addicted to Metal

A good thing to try out is to go to a video store that has a video compilation, like "Monsters of Metal" which will have evreything from Kyuss, to Deicide, to Emperor, to Hatebreed. just note the bands you really liked and head on over to Tower and get a metal cd album.

EDIT: Also, i just remembered about sampler cd's from record labels. Occasionally labels will circulate a mix cd with all upcoming songs from bands on their label. I found out about a band called Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum from a cd like that from The End Records. I've fallen in love with the band! you should see if The End, Nuclear Blast, Metal Edge, or Road Runner is doing that, always a good opportunity to expand metal taste.

Re: Addicted to Metal

Yeah, I got into some of the heavier stuff by buying a complilation cassette many many years ago. That's where I first heard Pestilence (f*cking badass). I've been into Sepultura, Pantera, Obituary, etc. since high school. Then it was onto Nailbomb, Clutch, Soulfly, Six Feet Under, etc. Then I got into Korn and was the biggest Korn freak. I'm sorry but Korn is just a method band now. I actually own Untouchables. I didn't even realize that until I looked the other day. I thought Issues was okay. I guess I just prefer industrial or metal moreso these days then the drop-d 7 string stuff... haha.

Vinny, do you go to the Tower Records in NYC? I haven't been there in like 11 years. If I ever get up to NJ to see my siblings and my sister is serious about taking us to NYC we're definitely going to Tower Records.

Re: Addicted to Metal

Right on Broadway, up about 10 streets from Times Sq. There actually used to be a Tower Records right here in Rockland, (Suburb county adjacent to the city) which was only 5 minutes from me but they went out of business... saddest day of my life.

Re: Addicted to Metal

Century Media does a lot of those samplers. Every time I order something from those guys they send me a couple of them.
