Well, over here in New Jersey, we're in the middle of a drought, and the temp today was 82°F. It's really quite dissapointing. I want snow.

Firstly... it's still snowing here in NZ (they've even lost lots of the little lambs in Otago)!

Secondly... go to www.snow-forecast.com they have weather predictions for every resort I know of (incl wind speed, cloud cover and temperature) as well as being able to tell you where in the world it's snowing...

Thirdly... an adult early-bird season pass at Ruapehu (which has two ski areas, Whakapapa and Turoa) was NZD 249 or about USD117 this year. That takes you from July thru to the end of this month - it's even cheaper if you a 'youth.' Ruapehu is about 4 1/2 hours drive from Auckland (about 225 miles) and 3 1/2 hours from Wellington at legal speeds. I can't tell you what we USED to do a 'Dawn Banzai Raid' in case the constabulary decide to add some more endorsements to my licence...

Fourthly... I live in the North Island but ski in Wanaka. I can get a rental to thrash up TC every day for USD32 and it comes with a lift pass.

Lastly... good luck. Remember you have no friends on a powder day only other people looking to trash your stash of powder...

Too late ...Another obscure joke from the ancient Britons.....extreme cold weather is occasionally refered to in England as 'cold enough to freeze the nuts off a brass monkey'..or 'brass monkeys' for short:bandit:

Dammit I'm going to have to update my humor software!:o

Brass Monkeys

My understanding was that the correct term historically is 'to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.'

In the old days, British naval ships used muzzle loaded cannons and the cannonballs were usually stacked in a pyramid shape on the deck of the boat. The cannonballs in the base were held by a triangular or square brass plate with a raised lip called a 'monkey.'

At extremely cold temperatures, the difference in the expansion rates of the iron cannonballs and the brass monkey would eventually cause the balls to topple off the stack as the brass contracted far more in the cold than the iron balls.

So hence 'freeze the balls off a brass monkey.'
