Re: Revell Ferrari 250 GTO new model

tower hobbies listed for $26.99. Price is reasonable.

Is it going to be a limited release?

I hope revell is going to re-release the 275. I'm still hunting for the spyder.

Re: Revell Ferrari 250 GTO new model

Thanks Hiroaki. One more step of comparo: the grey one is the Climax-MFH GTO '63 Tourist Trophy #12., the center one the Italeri, the stripped one the Protar.

Re: Revell Ferrari 250 GTO new model

i love my Italeri kit (thanks, klutz!) so much that i bought another on eBay. MFH makes an excellent set of wheels with correct Dunlops, and the Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland engine kit is worth every penny.

Re: Revell Ferrari 250 GTO new model

I hope that everybody is sitting down.

I recognize the Protar/Revell kit! It is the ole Aurora model from the 60's. Monogram bought the Aurora assets in the mid 70's. Monogram reissued the kit a few times. I betcha that is a Revellogram Aurora kit. I will have to get my old Aurora box out of the stash to compare!!

Re: Revell Ferrari 250 GTO new model

Protar kit is NOT Aurora/Monogram. Italeri kit is NOT Aurora/Monogram. Aurora kit is so badly mishaped that I can't even call it Ferrari, much less a GTO. Its a joke of a kit.

Re: Revell Ferrari 250 GTO new model

I pulled out my 1964 Aurora issue. You are correct, sorry. The parts layout are very similar to each other.

In the history of Aurora, it is pointed out that the model was originally done as a 250 SWB but when the GTO came out, they did a new body but made it short to fit the shorter chassis. I do not think that then ever imagined anyone discussing that 40+ years later.

Wheel base of the GTO is 2400 mm / 94.5 in, exactly the same as 250 SWB. The chassis is not shorter, it is exactly the same length.

Re: Revell Ferrari 250 GTO new model

Ok, I was quoting a book on the history of Aurora models which mentioned why the author stated that the bodywork of the GTO did not look quite right. I did not check the veracity of the Aurora book against the Ferrari factory literature.

Aurora made 1/25 scale models of European cars at a time when AMT would not touch these. (Monogram issued their slot car bodies as static kits.) Also the models were done at a time when the typical modeler was 10 to 12 years old spending his spare US$1.25 for a weekend project. The Aurora models were (off the top of my head): GTO, Maserati 3500 GT, Ford GT, Chaparral 2C, Avanti, Aston Martin DB4, Jaguar XKE and the Porsche 904.

Again, these were made 1963-64 for the youth market.

I am not comparing these to the 50-$100 kits out there now. Sorry, to have made the original statement in error, but if you ever saw the Aurora parts on the tree, they look very similar to the revell protar trees.

Honestly the fact that I mentioned a 40 year old mass produced kit in the same thread as very pricey kits does not call for the 'bad ass' treatment. I am 48, when I was 12, I was very happy to see the Aurora kit. I recall building one (and the Maserati) years later from a Monogram box.
