I use AMS Oil, better than even royal purple but not as readily available. If they were available like RP, everyone should be using it. They are the true pioneers in sythetic lubricants. I've done my research for hours apon hours deciding what to put in my Mustang after the 331 was built up. Expensive, but you get what you pay for.

I read that Amsoil doesn't have the wear properties that other leading synthetics use.

I know a very knowledgable (sp?) gentlemen that gets Amsoil for free...and doesn't use it in his performance vehicles.

Not saying it is a bad oil. Just passing along info I have heard.

yeah I'd rather not use it in my RX-8, i would rather go with a thiker oil like RP cause the 8 eats oil like crazy

I used to run mobil 1 in the eclipse when i had it, but it caused horrible lifter tick due to the detergents that are in it. I'm a service advisor at a GM dealership and i can tell you most people wont use mobil 1 just because they dont want to pay $80 for an oil change, it's way to pricey now.

it's very very debateable...the reasons for using regular oil is because they said it lubricates the seals better, but that is based on information that was provided over 10 years ago, with the Fc's. The seals that are used in the renesis are different and stronger seals, there have been people running synthetic in the renesis and currently have well over 60k miles on them.

Also RP is the only synthetic oil that is reccomended to use in rotaries because they themselves have been using the oil for over 10 years in thier own FD's and have continously been doing thier R & D about the rotaries so their oil can always be used.

I find that very interesting. Did you happen to read that on the internet somewhere? If you did you mind sending me a link? I try to keep an open mind about oils and all the so called "independant" tests out there. But when i was researching RP, AMS, Mobil1 etc. a few years ago. I couldn't find anything that said negative stuff about AMS oil. In fact I found a VERY good comparison between the two using an LS1 engine even. Now like i said, i keep an open mind about Independant tests and everything but so far to date i have found nothing more complete then that test. It compared AMS oil directly with Mobil 1.

It isn't that it adds horsepower. It reduces friction thus reducing drivetrain loss. On Horsepower T.V. and Trucks they tried out the Royal Purple on the dyno and freed up more power than I would have expected. This also means better gas mileage.

When it warms up my tranny, t-case, and diff are all getting RP.

I wouldn't put Penzoil in my car if you gave it to me for free. Any half ass mechanic will tell you Penzoil makes crappy products. In fact a buddy of mine's dad found out his used car had it inside, and immediately took it out for another name brand oil, eventhough the car wasn't due for an oil change.

That said i'd probably use Castrol Synthetic or some other brand of synthetic motor oil if Mobil 1 becomes too expensive.

He says he gets Amsoil for free from a sponsor and still uses something else.

Granted, he doesn't pay much for the other oils either.
He recommended the VP synthetics to me. In turn, I ordered a case.

Short answer...no Royal Purple is not "better" oil than Mobil 1. However it depends on your viewpoint here...RP uses heavy doses of Phospherous as a additive.....this is good for cleaning etc. Mobil 1 5-30 thins out to a 20 weight after less than 500 miles.....the friction modifiers are superior in Mobil 1 but the add packs are superior in RP (rust/oxidation/engine cleaning agents etc)...so if you look at Used Oil Analysis you see Mobil 1 has better wear results after 5000-/+ Oil Change Intervals but RP provides better long term protection on engine tear down and ring wear

Looks like he used to run Amsoil. I think he still does in a few of his vehicles.

Apparently this new Pennzoil Platinum is a very good oil though.
