BTW, I have no issues with PC... I could care less whether people want to be PC or use slang or terms or whatever. But being in disagreement with such ideals like homosexuality and then trying to get people on a car forum to stand behind you is just stupid IMO.

To all the homosexuals that post or have come across this thread I am sorry that you must be subjected to this. But I'm sure those people are used to it, just like how minorities are used to bigotry and racism.

Question for you... are you Catholic?

Re: Smothering stupidty

I just don't understand it. That ad was funny, and I don't think it insulted anyone. People in the US get so strangled and caught up in PC that common sense just takes a back seat. People wouldnt have batted an eyelid in Europe. I don't see why people need to cry about everything all the time. The Jewish Rabbi who wanted the Christmas trees removed from the airport, the Muslim clerics who cried racism when booted off the plane, this ad... people whine so much about everything. Take it as it is, and move the fcuk on.

All the ad shows is stereotypical straight male behavior: they accidentally kiss, and then have to "do something manly" to reaffirm theyre not gay. I laughed because it's funny the way they did it. And then I forgot about the ad, until this thread came up. I didnt go around thinking "oh my god what a terrible ad, now people are going go around hunting gay men because this ad portrays a severely homophobic and potentially dangerous attitude." With the same mentality, how about we ban all comedy, period. Comedy shows and stand-ups cross the line every day. But people laugh, don't give a crap, and move the hell on. Why is this ad, obviously more subtle than any comedy skit out there, much more offensive?

Seriously, WTF is wrong with people.

You're joking right? Do a google search for something like "homosexuality genetics", you'll be reading for days. If you've never seen any studies linking genetics to homosexuality, you're simply not educated on the subject.

Homosexuals are treated like second-class citizens in the United States. Most states are now defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman, meaning that current laws actually give civil and financial privileges to heterosexual couples, which is blatant discrimination, something that oddly enough is illegal according to Amendment 14 of the US constitution. Ads like this serve only serve to reinforce the negative stereotypes of homosexuality that are based on completely ignorant and hateful views that stem from ridiculous religious ideology. How is that justified simply because it makes people laugh?

That's partially correct. It is my opinion that homosexuality is a choice, although not necessarily a conscious one.

Again, I've never seen any conclusive EVIDENCE. Theories =\= evidence.

Behavior is simply the way people respond to stimuli (as defined by psychologists). So are you saying people have no choice in how they behave?

Thank you for that shattering insight. I know lesbianism is homosexuality. YOU indicated that I was only opposed to gay men but not "hot" gay women. This is not the case. And thank you for the kind words. Just because you have a gay family member doesn't give you license to insult me, nor does it mean I harbor some personal hatred for your relative.

I am not afraid of, nor do I hate homosexuals. You're name calling only accentuates your inability to argue with civility.

Maybe you should return it. If you're going to "blow your own horn" on the basis of having a Master's Degree in English, perhaps you should double check your punctuation and grammar beforehand.

So, I'm stupid because I'm using the "current affairs" discussion forum to discuss current affairs? I'm also not trying to "get people...to stand behind" me. I'm just opening up a topic for discussion. That means people are free to voice their agreement/disagreement with my original post.
And please, don't apologize to anyone on my behalf. I'm only expressing an opinion.
Oddly enough, in the course of my life the only people who have ever taken offense to my beliefs on this subject were not even gay, they were just "champions for the cause".
The gay people I HAVE discussed this with are usually content with agreeing to disagree. Of course they understand that I have no personal issues with them. I actually became friends with a young gay man who worked for me for about a year. He knew full well my beliefs, and I knew his. It didn't stop us from discussing all sorts of other things that we had in common, nor did it make us bitter towards eachother. We even regularly made jokes about his being gay or my being straight. Much like meeting someone who voted differently than me in an election, it doesn't incite me to some violence or other hateful reaction. We simply disagree.

And the ending to my wall of text, what exactly does my being or not being catholic have to do with this discussion?
Firstly, I am not Catholic. Secondly, if I were, I would hope that you weren't going to use that as a weapon by suggesting that Catholics condone homosexual pedophilia, and as such I was somehow a hypocrite. That would certainly be in bad taste.

But I'm sure that wasn't your intention at all, was it?

ok, then if it is a choice issue, then why don't you go spend a day having consciously chosen to be gay.

I completely disagree. People have dissected a very simple ad, and taken out from it something that is not there.

And as for second class citizens... where do I begin. Half the country is full of "second-class" citizens, from Muslims to gays and a plethora in between. Gays are not denied jobs, schooling, civil protection, or housing (etc.) under law, are they? It's another matter entirely if the discrimnation is off the books and in the hearts and minds of people. Is it really so shocking to encounter resistance and backlash for an apparently outlandish change in the legal system regarding an alteration such as same-sex marriage? How about all the Muslims in this country take their religious right to marry FOUR women at a time, to court? What about other polygynoys or polyandrous societies trying to change the books? Do not confuse my reasoning for a personal agenda....gays want to get married? More power to them. But to sit in awe and misery at the rigidity of an age-old system's resistance in the face of drastic and revolutionary change, is something that is not to be expected.

The ad says more about homophobic males than it says about homosexuality. It can be twisted into anything people would like to make a fuss about, and in this scenerio, it's gay rights. The ad itself is funny, because it's focused on those two "manly" homophobic nitwitts and their snickers bar, and how they have to exhonnerate one another after a slight accident. That's it. I did not see anything more to it. And again, I refer to all the comedy shows on Comedy Central. "Nigga", "towel-head", "cracka", "homo" are just a few drops in an ocean of hardcore insults that comedians regularly use to make half the country bend over and laugh. Why is it, that a subtle ad like this, is getting so much flak? It has become a big deal only after folks went ballistic over it, inadvertedly glorifying the ad, and injecting the psychosematic anti-homosexual message into it, a lack of which existed before the drama.

As a counter-argument, you could argue that I am a straight male, and therefore am eternally disconnected to any potential hidden messages in this ad. I saw a VW ad about the new Polo. It shows an Arab man wearing a suicide belt get into the car, and drive up to a coffee place. He detonates the bomb inside the car, but the vehicle doesnt explode; it merely vibrates a little, but otherwise scratchless, and the bomber is obviously killed. At the end, the ad reads: "The new Polo, small but tough" or something of that nature. Now, I am not Arab, but I am Muslim. Given current events, if had the PC temprement of the people who've complained about this snickers ad, I would have been crying bloody murder. Instead, I was laughing my ass off. And this commercial, btw, was no where near as subtle as the snickers one. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ad4fagTyaM4

How about half-naked women posted on billboards all over the country, advertising make-up products? Does that not degrade and diminish the existance of womankind to a mere sexual object? All of those should be banned too. I'm sure we could all come up with limitless examples of where PC is abused to a much, much higher level than this ad, and no one notices. no one cares. It's all for a good laugh.

Re: Smothering stupidty

Yeah, I'm sure that Mars' intent was to pay an ad agency to purposely piss off one of the most vocal groups of PC whiners in the country.

That homophobe label is pure BS. It's just another pejorative attempt to stifle dissent from anybody with an opinion that disagrees with the homosexual lobby.

Some sociologists have suggested that homonegative, heterocentric, or heterosexist is a better descriptor of those who don't agree with the practice of homosexuality.

Shpyder, nice Polo commercial. I laughed at it, too. opcorn:

Re: Smothering stupidty

It's a snickers advert. It's intended to sell more chocolate. If you don't like the advert, don't buy the product. If the advert makes you feel so insecure that you have to debate its subtext ad nauseum find another wacko or pay a shrink to listen,.It'll take more than a few jerks whining about a television advert to sway my opinion ona topic that isn't really relevant to the message.

Where are you going with this exactly? Is this the age old addage "don't knock it 'til you've tried it"? I'm really not following your line of thought here.

no.
if sexuality is a choice issue then that means you can be by choice, gay for a day.

Re: Smothering stupidty

You've got a point.

I could choose to have sex with another man, and that would indeed be gay.

But seeing as how I'm not gay, I don't see how that would be very productive.

Re: Smothering stupidty

choosing to have sex with another man isn't the same as choosing to be gay.
you are confusing the act of sex and possibly procreation as well, with what is being homosexual.

Now if we look to the left here we'll see an example of an oxymoron.
