just think about it really. the b16 is a harder running higher revving engine than the b18. granted, the b18 has lower compression, but if you are going to build a b16 to be used for turbo you're not going to keep the stock compression ratio if you hope to boost any at all. so if you're talking bone stock internals, the b18 probably would be a better bet. but if you're looking for gross horsepower and a 9,000 RPM screaming boosted banshee, go for the b16.

If we are talking stock for stock the b18a motor is better for boost. The rods seem to hold out longer under boost than the b16 rods. But the b16 should not be overlooked when it comes to boost. Many have been successfully boosted. But if you are building up the motor before boosting each one would be a perfect candidate. I really don't like this b18 vs. b16 argument when it comes to turbo application. They are both good for boost if built but the b18 is better if you are using stock internals. But then again it all depends on the engine management system used and how well the setup is tuned.

actually want to replace the entire guts of the engine with near-R-Type internals and then slap a turbo on, thinking about stand-alone, but vafc at the very least, been told that it can be done, adjust the vtec engagement revs to hit 500 rpm before the turbo.
What do you think guys, the order of doing things? I have to ask, very new at this: b16a install(done) suspension rims & tyres internals+turbo(prob rebuilt, too much for fresh one)+fuel management? (last one's gonna be a bundle, damn!) Thanks for all the good work you are doing educating the novice!!!

It sounds like you have a decent plan, but I'm not sure about the specifics. I know many people have succesfully put turbo on a b16. Try to get ahold of someone who has already done close to what you have before, or a shop that has proven experience with similar setups.
The stand alone is nice, and will make a difference, but will be one hell of a headache unless you have the abilities/resorces to really tweak and tune, and it's not really necessary. I would suggest getting ahold of Hondata, or a similar company, and see what they have to offer. That would probably be good enough, and a much cheaper alternative. With a faster motor, and better handling, you'll be ripping around all over the place, so if ever a just in case, you'll want to be able to stop. Upgrade those brakes, if not before the suspension. Sounds good. |

Re: Turbo Advice
Quote:
you can use any turbo that your little heart desires. The hardest part will be finding a turbo manifold to fit your engine. Go look up some turbos from turbonetics or some mitsubishi turbos such as the Big 16g and Super 20g. I myslef have a super 16g and it spools up by 3k and it will support over 400 hp.
