Re: WIP - Customer's 5 Litre Mustang Convertible Drag Car

Lots of work going on here. You said the battery is going in the trunk, are you going to be able to open the trunk on this one?

Popped in the accessories and drivebelt. May strip the chrome and paint the alternator, not sure yet. Sheetmetal intake was fabricated out of sheet styrene and tube styrene, and I just cut the throttle body off the box-stock intake and glued it on there.

Interior's done except for the rollbar and harnesses, working on those now...

I like that you even got the blue/red on the heater controls, nice little detail.

Well, a tiny bit of orange peel, but there's some depth there. Should come out nicely with waxing later. And I think the blue is darn close:

Re: WIP - Customer's 5 Litre Mustang Convertible Drag Car

Really dumb question... but I gotta ask it. Are those headers backward?

OOOOOOOPS!!!!!!

Actually yes, they are, like most turbocharged engines, they face forward to plumb to the turbo.

Re: WIP - Customer's 5 Litre Mustang Convertible Drag Car

And now time for tigeraid's patented (or not) easy-fabricated turbocharger. Using 3mm solder. I'll be using it for all the turbo piping and exhaust as well.

I used a generator from an old Chevy kit as the central tube of the turbocharger. You can also use brake line (as the tutorial here on AF suggests) or aluminum or copper tubing, or styrene tube if you have a large enough diameter (I didn't.)

I twisted the solder around the central tube, leaving one end longer. Repeat, one for turbine, one for compressor.

Then fill in the gaps with putty or glue. Here's the putty roughed up.

And the final result, although the turbine housing has a cover on it in the car, so I'll have to add one of those on that side. I also added little bolt bosses on the compressor side by using really tiny styrene tube that's chamfered on one end (hard to see in the pic, they're facing inward.) The long piece of solder coming out of the turbine is, of course, the downtube to head down to the bottom the car. Drilled out the end of the tube of course, though it will be covered by an air filter.

The crossover pipe from one header to the other is now in place. The bubble-gum looking area on the pipe will be covered by the turbo and another pipe, so you won't see it.

Interior's basically done, need to find a shifter still, and he has a-pillar gauge pods I need to figure out how to make. The real car has the a-pillar and windshield blacked out, hence how it is here. Seats from my parts bin, harness belts are masking tape and harness hardware is from Detail Master.

Re: WIP - Customer's 5 Litre Mustang Convertible Drag Car

Quick update as I finish detailing the engine bay.... Made my own MSD ignition box (sans decal, probably will print one out though) by cutting the ends off a smallblock chevy finned valve cover, smoothing the sides, and filing a flat spot on one side.
