Re: WIP: Hasegawa Lancia Stratos 1/24 1977 Monte Winner
Agree Klein's "Rally" and "Rally Cars" are essential books for rally car modellers. I also have two books with some detail shots, one is "Racing Lancias" by Giancarlo Reggaiani, the other is "Lancia Stratos thirty years later" by Andrea Curami. However the best walkarounds can be found on the web at prestige sales sites like "Classic Cars" although I don't know if that is still online.

Here is a link to such a walkaround. Obviously not a rally machine but useful nonetheless.

The Lancia Stratos 'Super Profile' series by Haynes is quite good,
although mostly b&w photos with a few colour exterior shots towards the back. |

Re: WIP: Hasegawa Lancia Stratos 1/24 1977 Monte Winner
thanks for the reference source help guys and thanks for the link Phil, a couple of those books are on ebay at the moment so I'll be trying to pick em up there.
so here's another brief update... Well it's done - I have chopped the doors off, alot trickier than I thought it was going to be as the bottom of the front wheel arches and also the windscreen pillars were extremely fragile, unfortunately I cracked the passenger side pillar but a little CA glue and filler has fixed this - just hope it doesnt prove to be a weak point later on in the build. ![]() I then removed the four moulded bonnet/boot clips - these will be replaced with etched versions. ![]() I have also started to clean up the resin engine, Im probably going to start the project here as most of the engine needs to be built and detailed prior to installation - I can always add further cabling etc once its installed. I have decided to remove the resin axles and will replace these with metal rods or pins, Sakatsu also produce a set of boots for the 037 Rally which look to be very similar to the ones on the Stratos so Im gonna invest in a set and add them - this will require the transmission housing to be drilled to accommodate the new axle. ![]() thats all for now, more when I can get some more modeling time in. Re: WIP: Hasegawa Lancia Stratos 1/24 1977 Monte Winner
OK, I'm a little "late to this party," so to speak, so some of my comments here might be a little misplaced chronologically, but anyway, this sounds like a cool project! What makes is so interesting to me is that I am also building this kit (albeit the Pirelli-livery San Remo car). I am also opening up the front and rear. Here's where we differ--you got a rare resin engine; I handbuilt the entire engine and will be doing so with the rest of the engine bay out of plastic, spare parts, and copper wire. I will try to get some photos of that and post it on here sometime soon. Anyway, since I plan to open the front lid, I have done some searching and found some pictures--here is a bunch of pictures of the street Stratos, whose front trunk is almost identical to that of the rally Stratos.
http://www.carclassic.com/stock.asp?StockID=102819 Good luck with this project; I will be following it and hopefully posting my own here pretty soon. |

Re: WIP: Hasegawa Lancia Stratos 1/24 1977 Monte Winner
... a little further update,
The gap between the chassis floor and the shell is too big and requires filling. ![]() a quick check to see how much room I have allowing for the doors ![]() I then measured out and cut two sections from plascard to fill the gap, I filed the edge which sits against the body work at an angle of around 45 degrees so that it rests nicely against the sloping sides - this will be attached to the sides once all interior work is complete. Luckily I have avoided the nightmare that some of you have had of fitting the shell onto the bodywork, as I've cut the back off it simply slides into the shell which is a big relief! ![]() These are the revised sills in place ![]() ![]() I then created two more pieces that would enclose the interior from the front arches, this piece would also have to incorporate the hinge mechanism once I have decided how its going to work so they need to be substantial enough to take the weight of an open door. I first created a template from some paper and drew the shape of the inner wing. Using this I then cut out two more sections of plascard, after a little filing the two pieces were then fitted into shell. I added a little putty just to reinforce the join, I will sand this down to a clean finish once its dry. ![]() ![]() Finally in this update, I added the arches onto the rear cowl and bodywork and filled in any gaps with a little filler, these were a good fit in general and required little filling. I also added the inner rear section of the cowl. This will have to be hinged from this section - I have still to work that out but shouldnt be too difficult fingers crossed! ![]() ![]() The arches really add to the 'stocky' appearance of the Stratos, just looking at the rear cowl reminds me of what a stunning looking car this was. More again soon, will probably get back onto the engine and let the filler set before I sand it smooth Sean _______________________________ http://www.scalereproductions.co.uk _______________________________ Last edited by SeanyG; 11-10-2006 at 05:23 AM. |

Re: WIP: Hasegawa Lancia Stratos 1/24 1977 Monte Winner
Wow,
nice work Sean ! I didn't dare opening anything when I built mine. I remember having had many troubles to fit the body and the chassis, but regarding your work it appears that opening rear boot and doors, even if it could weaken the body, is the best solution to avoid fitting troubles as it release body of any forces. About the engine, I knew that reji did a TK, but Renaisssance...? Very promissing build, I will watch it close ! bye Phil |

Re: WIP: Hasegawa Lancia Stratos 1/24 1977 Monte Winner
Ok I better understand !
You supposed this TK to be a Renaissance's one, but it's the Reji TK ! I wonder why I didn't recognize Renaissance building instructions as they used to be, but as you said that it was Renaissance stuff... i just didn't notice you only "thought" it was Renaissance. But this time it's sure, it's Reji TK, isn't it ? Quote:

Re: WIP: Hasegawa Lancia Stratos 1/24 1977 Monte Winner
Thanks for the encouragement, Sean, and as for that link...
Those pictures are perfect!! Not great for details like the block, heads, and tranny (the parts I already built from other references), but perfect for the engine bay "peripherals", the parts I haven't yet made but was hoping for better reference material of. Thanks a lot!! And by the way, you're going one step further than me--I don't plan to open the doors (I suck at making hinges for them; I can handle trunks, but that's about it). Project looks good! I'll try to get some decent pictures of my engine once I finish it (still need dipstick, oil cooler/lines, oil collector/lines, oil filter decal and air cleaner decal, throttle cable, belt) and then post them. |
