Re: Cross Eyed WRX vs My Bug Eyed WRX

Tone is so hard to convery over the internet isn't it? Should I have riddled my posts with smilies and aberrant characters placed about to indicate mood and tone?

Also, I have been here and lurking for quite some time, so should I say welcome in return?

I delve into the motor quite a bit even on my pig of a USDM wrx. She's seen her fair share of tweaking, although the driveline is currently pulled due to a 2nd gear dog ring failure caused by the rear diff going, or possibly the other way around. Her last set of major toys were cobb 2.5 sb, ported USDM heads with Jun 272 guts, and GT35R snail. Since shes down and out again, I'm mostly likely going to punch her out a little and make the legs a little longer(bore and stroke) to somewhere in the neighborhood of 2.85l+ and go with a big meatier turbo. I have also owned an Aus spec MY04 that lived in thailand while I was working working overseas, while it didn't see anywhere near the volume of tweaks that it's USDM cousin did, it was no slouch, and all work was done by me.

If my tone came across as harsh, it's possibly because using a street race as a gauge of power is pointless, but my tone wasn't meant to be so harsh as to cause pride trauma. There are too many variables in street racing, most of the variables being the driver. You've simply proven you are a better driver, and kudos to that.

I apologize if I hurt your ego.

Maybe its different in Aus land, but I was always under the impression, from what I've read here on AF.com, that you shouldn't go with an intake...?

It depends if you tune for it. When I had a VF34 on stock block, catless TBE, 550cc injectors, 255lph FP, ecutek w/ delta dash, no snorkus(sucking air from the fenderwell) and a few other minor goodies. We ran it till it was hot, did a pull, installed an APS CAI, did a pull without tweaking the ECU yet, then looked at the logs. It looked like the maf was skewed enough to note, right in the middle of the first pull my IAM shot down to 8 which signified it had a HORRID knock event. Normally my IAM was 14-16 with a knock correction usually around +10 to +12 in the meat of the power band with my tune. After the intake the knock correction dropped to +5 peak and AFR went from 10.5 across the top without the intake, to 11.3 for some of the power then to 10.9 when it corrected itself in the meat of the power band, also the idle was wonky as hell. We changed the MAF scale a hair and did some tweaking and in the end it seemed it picked up a few ponies and seemed to be holding boost out a bit further and spool slightly quicker which would indicate easier breathing, but only after some serious tweaking.

Not all intakes are created equal, and results might not be as significant with the stock snail and tune, but it was enough to make me a bit weary of intakes without a proper tune. With decent gas the story might be different also. CA91 pisswater isn't the favorite beverage for subbies.

I backup my new friends point. It all depends on the tune. With the newer WRXs, it is almost impossible to bolt anything on without a good ECU tune. So when modding a WRX, you almost have to presume a good ECU tune will come with the mod before u can judge the mod itself.

And to my new friend...you sound like you have quite a nice impreza on ur hands. As to the street race...it was not at all to do with power etc. I only recently got my car modified and it was just a chance for me to see the difference compared to a stock WRX.

Oh and finally, someone I can ask. How would you compare the Aust spec WRXs with the USDM? Cos some of the ppl around here run their stock ones to crazy times (like 13.9) whereas on these forums ppl would call bullshit. Are the Aust ones faster? or pretty much the same?

The seats are FAR more comfortable even for a pretty big fellow, I'm a little over 1.8M and 105Kg and I guess the USDM seats were made for beached whales because the seats felt SOOOO much better on my back, much better support on the sides and just molded to me. Power wise it felt more linear and smooth, I'd believe it yanking high 13s. I suspected a different stock tune and the better gas was helping a lot. The tranny didn't seem quite as notchy as the USDM wrxs either, but maybe that was just me, being as I'm left handed having the stick on the correct side might have made a difference. Compared to the average bucket in Thailand it was pretty damn nice to have a scooby there. I was pretty bent when my company pulled me out, I was having a blast over there, oh was I supposed to be working?

thanks for the info.

I guess something so obvious never hit me. simply because we get 98RON at the pump must mean the Aust version WRX is tuned to a higher spec than the USDM. lol

Comparing an Evo or STi to a WRX is stupid.

A WRX in stock form is basically a turboed impreza. i.e. a turboed economy car.

Evo's and STi's are purists sports cars.

So at this point I would like to say F430

Re: Cross Eyed WRX vs My Bug Eyed WRX

or maybe an impreza is just a non turbo wrx, a stripped down performance car?
