Re: Two little things

Yeah, that's my hang-up with velcro. And I am from the south, used duct tape my fair share of times on other vehicles. But, this one is a lot cleaner than a farm truck or Jeep, so that's why I am looking for a way to do it and keep the inside looking clean. I was thinking about what my99cavy suggested, if I can find a way to mount a bracket without screwin holes in the dash I may end up goin with that.

Re: Two little things

Take out the passenger air bag and make it flip up from where the airbag cover sits.

Hey now theres an idea. You could make it look like its still a airbag until you flip a switch and then BAM a screen pops up. then when your done flip the switch again and it will just look like the stock airbag cover.

Re: Two little things

Alrighty, now here's a dumb question: this is the first vehicle I have owned with an airbag, how do I yank that bastard out?

Its actually not a dumb question. I'm really not sure how you would take it out either. I know before you go messing with it you better disconnect the battery. I would imagine that its held on there with some bolts but I'm really not sure.

If you are going the route with the monitor where the airbag use to be, are you going to do this on your own??

Re: Two little things

Yeah, I don't see why not. Once the bag is out, from there it's just a matter of figuring out what I would use to mount the monitor on a setup that raises up and locks open, how to run the cable to it underneath the dash to plug into the bottom of monitor, and then test it all out. Will there be any kind of dummy light that pops on when I take that bag out, there's the issue of passing inspection when that time comes around..

Re: Two little things

Just take out the Airbag fuse on the side of the dash, or for extra safety, unhook the negative battery connection, then I'm assuming the passenger side airbag is like the driver's side one and is only held on by bolts/screws and plugged in, unscrew the bolts or screws and unplug it. I think if there isn't an airbag plugged in then the airbag light will come on, if that's the case just stick some tape behind the gauge face so the light doesn't show.
As for the monitor, if you don't want to go so technical, don't make it motorized, make it so you lift it up manually and then have two support "sticks" that just fall into place when it lifts up to hold it up/open.

Re: Two little things

Oh yeah, I wasn't gonna do it motorized. Where would those bolts for the bag be located? I'm assuming that side of the dash-bottom will be coming out

Re: Two little things

I think you should be able to get at them just by removing the top/vinyl part of the dash.

Re: Two little things

Cool cool. Any special tools needed or precautions so I don't destroy the dash? And are thses things pop-off or old fashioned and screwed to the car? Sorry, I can do engine work like nothing, but interior on newer cars is japanese to me.

Nevermind, I looked in the non-performance section and found classicrocjunkie's step-by-step. Doesn't seem that difficult, couple of small bolts and badabing badaboom. Well, if I run into any snags or yall have more suggestions I'll keep checking back.

Re: Two little things

Back to that squeaking problem...If you have plastic wheel covers I would put a $100 on it that they were the things making the squeaking noise regardless of breaking. Does it sound like a bird chirping behind you. Its a common problem on cavs and sunfires. If I had test drove my 03 cav in summer ie. windows down and not in the middle of winter I would of held out the two weeks for the upgraded rims. The guys at the dealership loved seeing me time and time again complaining that they sold me a squeaky car and never informed me of the problem (that the salesman knew about) before purchase. I think they replaced my wheel covers a total of 5 times and then I gave up and started turning the music up.
