Love my GLI

I just purchased my Blue 2002 GLI. This was one of the first with the 24V engine and 6 Speed transmission. I LOVE IT!!! I had looked at the WRX but didn't like the interior or the bug eyes. The GLI is nicely done. I have the leather seats with the cold weather package and there is nothing like getting in a cold car and having a hot ass.

I do believe that the suspension needs to be stiffer. The only way I have found is to lower it some. The power off the line make the rear drop to much and the front tires tend to spin very easily.

Has anyone done the springs on there own? How hard is it?

Springs

The rear springs are a snap. Jack up the car and put jack stands under the body. Then jack up the rear axle a little just to remove the weight. Remove the lower shock bolts and lower the axle down. Then springs will come out with just a little twist. The lowered springs will go in easy.
The front struts will need a spring compressor. Jack the front up and put jack stands under the body. remove the front wheels. remove the pinch bolt that hold the strut to the knuckle. There is a special tool the you put into the opening of the knuckle and open up the knuckle where it goes around the strut. If you don't have that too, you could use a big screwdriver and twist the screwdriver in the slut. Do not hammer the screwdriver in because you don't want to damage the strut. remove all the wires that are held on to the strut. Remove the nut from the top of the strut and the pull the strut out. Place the strut into a vice, without overtightening, and put on the strut compression. Compress the springs until the load is off the top of the strut hat. Remove the 21mm nut from the strut top/ upper strut bearing and remove the spring. Assembly is the reverse of removal.

Good luck,
Todd

re: Springs

Thanks for all the info. I will let you know how it goes. Any recomendations on what springs I should use? It is a daily driver on a 100 mile commute. I do like to drive hard though.
