seriously danielle, try to avoid roommates. I thought having roommates would have saved me some $$$. One of the guys still owes me $2300+; i don't think the other guy owes me more than $500. Just be careful of the people who you allow into your place.

Re: apartments
The vast majority of apartments unless in small college towns give a ton of lease options. I've been looking around the Houston area and everyone of them offers a 3-month lease. Along with 3,6,9,12,13, and a few that offer longer than that.

1. how far is work from where you'll be living. 2. will busses be running.... also will you be willing to get onto the bus. 3. is the car something your planning on having for just a few months, or long term. 4. especially if you finance it, will you also be able to afford the higher insurance rate for full coverage, than theres: gas and maintainance.

Re: apartments
im not sure if i'd be taking it to college with me and i was thinking about only getting a $300-$400 car with the cheapest insurance i can find. i'm not sure about work yet cuz i haven't started looking for my full-time summer job yet partly because i'm not sure where the apartment will be. i'm a few months shy of 18 and i have ridden public transportation once in my life, not including the few times i rode in a taxi on a vacation. so i don't know if i want to do that now. maybe i could bike or walk.

Re: apartments
Generally you need 1/2 a years pay to for a years rent as from what I understand. Back in 10th grade we had to do a project in math on how much it would cost live here in the area at that time. Minimum yearly salary to BARELY get by was 24,000- 27,000 dollars a year. Now it is probably 30,000-33,000 a year. Also will your parents still pay for college if you move out etc. There is a lot more to consider. Being that this a summer thing I am pretty sure you'll still need to be working for some period of time before you get considered for a lease that's especially true because of your age. Stop driving now start using public transportation more if your considering getting rid of your car. It will be less stress on you if you have to use it later on. That's about as much as I can offer. Good luck.

Re: apartments
i've had a job at petsmart since march 04, so i've saved up about $2600 so far. i plan on getting scholarships and student loans and paying for college myself. some days my parents say they'll pay for a little some days they say i'm on my own. supposedly when i graduate i'll be getting some money as a graduation gift, i think it'll be around $1500. i don't want to be dependent on my parents because then they'll still have control of me and that isn't something i want. i live in a "village" of about 9000 people just north of madison right now, so there is no public transporation and stuff like that. and for that roomate i thought i had, he changed his mind so yeah idk about him.

Re: apartments
Seems you are off to a good start. But keep in mind if you leave your parents you may lose your health insurance. That is a VERY important thing. You never know what is going to happen. I went in the hospital going on two years in october and just walking in the door it was 1500. I was tested and all and we walked out with a 5k bill, if I didn't have health insurance from my mother's job we would have been in deep financial trouble. This is something VERY important that you must consider. I've seen hospital bill ruin people's lifes.

Re: apartments
yeah there is alot to consider financially when moving out. You dont really realise how much you rely on your parents untill its not there anymore. A decent health insurance plan should run you around 100 bucks a month. Lucky for me, im moving in with my GF, and in michigan there is a law that says people who are living together, as in partners, can use eachothers health insurance plans. My GF is getting health insurance through her work, so i can just use that if i need it.
Also dont forget renters insurance, gas which is a big one this year, water, electricity, food, cable, internet, car insurance if you have a car, all that on top of rent. The place my GF and i are looking into getting, its gonna cost us each around 900 dollars a month, thats including everything i just listed. Were looking at a nicer apartment, rent alone is 700 bucks a month. But i think its worth it not to have my shit stolen or broken into. |

Re: apartments
the cowboy made a good point about having health insurance. Its amazing how fast the charges come together. If I'm not mistaken, as long as you are going to school full-time, you are covered to 25. are you going to find another roommate, or fly solo? utilities are usually not too bad in the summer, but still lots of money

Re: apartments
You two spend 900 each, so 1800 a month? With 700 rent? And 700 a month is a nice apartment? Wow, I know a kid living by himself in a half decent apartment that pays 700 for rent, about 140 month insurance, 60 phone bill, 100 cable/internet, utilities are normally about 150. Thats 1150. 1800 a month sounds a bit steep. Many apartments cover some utililties.
