Re: 406.60mph WIP
Those 90 degree'd flat tube things attached to the intake are indeed for breathing. They allow any builtup crankcase pressure that occures during operation to be vented to the outside atmosphere rather than allowing the crankcase to build up pressure and force oil into water passages, intake/exhaust stems and combustion chambers.
Oh yeah, and NICE job so far!!!!...;-)>

Re: 406.60mph WIP
hey everyone, its been awhile and this thing is taking a lot more work then i had planned on. lots of little set backs and redo's and research but at least i finally have something with paint on it.
![]() the actual aluminum parts are much lighter (more white then aluminum) and super clean but when i had them like that, they just didnt look right so i put on a light wash after i repainted them with a darker mix of paint. (in these pics everything looks a bit dark but really the blowers are much lighter) it's not as accurate now but looks a lot better. and of course looking back at my reference pics, the blue should be lighter also. oh well. ![]() here is the slow evolution of my valve covers. the kit parts had bad sink holes in them and the ribs had very poor definition to them. also they are too flat, the real ones have more height to them. so i sanded off all the detail and built up the height with plastic and added the ribs with um, you know, sprue (naturally!) and painted them to check for defects. then i added the breather tubes and looked all over for something to make the chrome oil caps.(hmmmm, what would Klutz do here?) i ended up using an antena from an old radio and shaped them in my dremel. using an old file i got the basic shape althou the real ones are higher and a wee bit wider then what i have made. the real valve covers have a champion sticker on them and i dont have decals like that so for now i will leave them as is. i cant wait to get the engines done and make real progress as im getting pretty tired of making or correcting 4 of everything. 8 in the case of the exhaust and valve covers. thanks for looking all, cheers. Les

Re: 406.60mph WIP
Wow Les coming along really well, don't give up although it must be a pain to do everything 4 times. Love the fact that someone is building such an unusual car. Do you have plans for any other land speed record cars?

Re: 406.60mph WIP
I'm so glad you've updated!! I was gonna bump the thread on Monday just to annoy you
(gridgirl's FIat 500 is on my bump list, too)Great re-work on those parts, Les! Meticulous job ![]() And sprue, too! Yay!!! Quote:
![]() Very ingeniuos solution - a kind of "telescopic lathe"? ![]() Les, PM me the dimensions and maybe a pic of those decals you want. I'm playing at making some decals at the moment and I'll try something for you if you want? Also I just picked up a box of old decals on auction and I'll have a shuffle through. If I get anything like you want, I'll put it in an enveloiope to you. Keep up the great work on your high speed "4X4"

Re: 406.60mph WIP
hey everyone, just a small update here. work is going slow but slowly getting there. still waiting for my ignition wire in the mail, so i have been working on other areas. but here is what i have for now after spending a full week making the valve covers.
![]() these are the injectors next to the original piece. wasnt sure at first how to go about making them but i seemed to end up doing it the slow way. only the front engines have a scoop and i made them out of a piece of sprue hollowed out carefully with my dremel. i made the injectors about 1 mm taller just to have a tiny bit more room for the linkages. once i clean them up a bit and paint them aluminum, i will add the hoses and linkages. this is the part i was trying to replicate.thanks everyone for your interest and, Malscar-im thinking of making the Green Monster made and driven by Art Arfons. he was making an attempt at the record the same time Mickey Thompson was but his car had a jet engine. Freakmech- the novelty of this kit is wearing thin with all the repetition of the engines and i also have a hard enuff time with just one! cheers all, Les

Re: 406.60mph WIP
You could also do Athol Graham's red Salt Lake City and Campbell's Bluebird as they were all playing at Bonneyville. I thought Thompson had an engine blowup and only put out the story about the driveshaft to keep Pontiac happy?
Beautiful detailing by the way. Mal |

Re: 406.60mph WIP
thanks everyone for the kind words, really picked up my ambition. althou i havent come across any info or rumours like that in my research, Malscar, you could be right on because this car doesnt have any driveshafts. lol. the differentials are directly connected to the transmissions. maybe it was a miss quote somewhere and it was an axle shaft that let go? but i have noticed in my old car mags that Pontiac was really making it known it was their engine in the car and a record attempt was great publicity. and thanks for your suggestions on more projects. i will see which would be the easiest. ( i need to rest after this one)

Re: 406.60mph WIP
Outstanding as ever, Les!
I am so impressed with the way you make these details come to life. Your posts just keep pushing me to try harder and emulate your style and attention to detail - thank you for that.

Re: 406.60mph WIP
the sorta smallish diminutive mega update here:
Quote:
just a bit more here for all. ![]() the 99% almost completed injector. this little sucker took me all evening to do and i was hoping to have at least 2 done but i ran out of the black wire. i coulda sworn i had more, good thing i had ordered more almost a month ago, which still hasnt arrived yet.![]() here is an idea of what the drivetrain looks like, the tranny's and engines are attached to this bulkhead which then is nestled in the frame. i will add a wash to the diffs tomorrow. except for hours of sanding mold lines and filling sink holes and ejector pin marks, i didn't modify the diffs and trannys at all. i couldnt find a pic of the diffs so i guessed at the colour. thanks again everyone for looking, cheers Les
