Re: I always wondered....

well from my race (the guy had a convertible crome Cobra rs and 4 people) from a dead stop he left me while i spun off the line caught traction he was about a car length in front of me.
tacked out 1 nose to rearbumber
tack out 2 his nose to my rear bumber.
now i'm guessing it had been me and just him from a dead stop i wouldent 'of caught up til like third maybe third or somthin. but my race was with a 97 or below
like stated the body didnt change in 98 but the motor did to make a pathatic attempt to fight off LS1. and then in 99 they were forced to do somthing out poped the new gt, mach 1 and cobra svt super charged. but back to what i was saying the prior gt modles an r/t and gto can handel . we have the same horse power but damn that little thing called torque u guys got. plus a two door coupe wieghs in a like 3080 an r/t gto 3375 pounds thats alot

Gt's were never intended to compete with z28s really. and the ls1 showed up in camaros in 98. the mustang v8 in 94/95 was a 5.0 then changed in 96 to a 4.6. then in 99' came a new body style and 40 more hp in the gt

Re: I always wondered....

It's kind of sad you compare a 3.0L GTO with a 4.6L or 5.0L V8 in the first place... I guess that goes to show the difference between a Ford with an extra 2 cylinders and 2.0L and a Japanese car with a smaller engine and similar weight

Why is that sad? just because the ford has the bigger engine with similar output doesnt mean their cars are worse than that of mitsubishi's

Re: I always wondered....

Im sure ford could have got another 100bhp out of their V8 if they had put more time into tuning.

yea but that would more than likely have raised the price of the mustang quite a bit. and pony cars were intended to be pretty cheap for the amount of performance

Re: I always wondered....

I'd take a stock 3000GT over a mustang any day just for the fact that the 3000 doesnt look like a rectangle

that or V-TEC.
statement about compete with ls1's was ford pathatic attempt however ford was trying to make the mustang aFORDable as possible. for example you can run midgrade gas in the 4.6 i don't think its the same with the ls1. but what gave the ford the hp jump was heads and a new cam. and i would deffenitly pick a GTO/ Stealth over an everyday "Secretary's" car .

Re: I always wondered....

Ok, let's not start digging into Fords, as I think this is the first Ford owner who has come in here without an attitude

Anyway, I just wanted to say one thing. As far as the DOHC vs. pre 99 GTs, I wouldn't say either will definantly emerge victorious. In all honesty, I'd give the GT better odds (talking about manual vs. manual). Yes DOHC SLs have run 14.9s, but so did my buddy's 97/98 (?) GT. Generally, the SLs are considered to run a bit higher...like low-mid 15s...as well I'd guess GTs probably are rated somewhere in the low 15s as well. My point is, I don't think we should be saying one will beat the other, because I think they are so close that the most important thing is the driver. So yeah, I just wanted to say that the DOHC will keep up with you, but I wouldn't try to predict a winner.

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.

Re: I always wondered....

I have the SOHC... and I raced my buddy's 96 Mustang 3.8l... and I had no problem taking him... from a dig, roll, or even at the stoplight (starting from idle)... my car was mostly stock at the time... the only thing I had was dual exhaust (as did he)... he'd get me off the line, b/c of that extra torque... but I'd get him by the end of second gear... then again... his car only lasted until a few weeks later... b/c he got an oil change at Midas, and they put in the wrong dipstick... showing more oil than it had... and therefore blowing the engine...
The new owner has since put in a 2000 3.8l ( had to use the 96 heads, rebuilt) and a supercharger... so he's putting down quite a bit more than I now...
