Not only did the WRX put down a better 0-60 and comparable quarter mile times with less than $2000 worth of upgrades, it was more fun to drive because it the EVO is tuned more as a track car than a rally car and can't slide through turns a well as the WRX (which can be either a good thing or a bad thing depending on your driving style).
Regardless both the STi and the EVO's specs vary depending on what market they are sold to. ie, the Jap spec versions of both these cars are "rated" at an identical 276 hp which is the power cap for Japan. The European spec versions are less powerful 260 and 255 horsepower respectively, so yes a Japan-spec EVO would be faster than a European STi but thats comparing apples and oranges. They're both excellent cars, run basically the same numbers and in stock trim can kick the shit out of a wide assortment of cars.

The Euro Evo VII is a full 276ps. The Euro Evo wipes the road with the current Euro and Jap spec STis excluding the STi 202.
What really separates the euro STi vs. the euro Evo is that the Evo has much better low rpm power and responsiveness. The UK Evos are SVA (grey imports really) while the Euro STi is a fully approved model.
A stock Evo with an uprated clutch should be in the high 4s 0 – 60mph. Look at the trap speeds 103 Evo, 99.3 WRX. A stock Evo clutch is good for 6 hard launches that’s it. An AP organic is one of the first mods most people will do. They complained right in the article about the smoking clutch.
All that said I love the WRX and came close to buying one.
