It has long been said that Tamiya's gloss acrylics dry glossy with their own thinner because of some particular additive they add (it's been guessed that it's glycerin). Without this additive, the gloss acrylics dry to a matt finish. I believe that if you polish out the paint with Tamiya rubbing compound or the like, it will also be glossy- it's really just the surface that dries matt. Their flat acrylics don't need the additive. Give the Tamiya thinner a try, you may have better results.

Water is fine to thin acrylics- just don't use it straight (mix it with alcohol), and use distilled instead of tap water.

Just want to add: Don't thin Tamiya Acrylic with Water.

If you use Model Master Acrylic (for example) Water does work perfectly, but it has no impact on tamiya "acrylic"
