Re: 2002 Camaro SS

Ok, when I get home, Ill try and take apart the LS1 and dip it in brake fluid. Oh man taking apart this LS1 should be fun D: I guess I figured that the LS1 (like I said I really dont know anyone with a LS1 vehicles) was painted black because 1) the directions said so 2) chevy paints their race engines black for heat displacement. Oh well.

About the wiring, I dont plan on using this LS1 in this Camaro, so I will be able to wire the engine.

I guess I hsould tell you the engine Im putting into it, its going to be a 427 BBC ZL-1. I just need to purchase another Yenko Camaro kit.

/edit: I really cant tell from his post, but what exactly are the inaccuracies? I see that he puddied up the side of the bumper, but I cant tell what he fixed.

Not if they're aluminum, which dissapates heat much better than any paint. If you get some silver spray paint (like that wonderful cheap Walmart stuff), you should be able to paint over the black without having to strip it.

If you're planning on putting the 427 as it is in the Yenko, it will not fit with the carb. LS1's are half under the windshield, and space is tight as is. You'll at the very least have to build a cowl hood for it; maybe you should look into making some kind of fuel injection for it.

edit: There is no panel line behind the headlight. the fender comes right up to the headlight, and the panel line runs vertically from the headlight to the front bumper.

Re: 2002 Camaro SS

The 2002 Camaro ZL1 I saw had a LS6 427 ZL1, if I want to make it fuel injected, I guess I have a few possiblilities. I could make direct fuel injection through the manifold and have a Throttle Body on top, I could rig up the LS1 intake to work on the 427 (Do they make an LS1 intake for the BBC IRL?) Or I could make the cowl, and have to loose the sexy SS hood =(

Re: 2002 Camaro SS

Here's a little site to do some research. Now, there's a big difference between the 69 2002 ZL1's you can buy and the special car GM built to go heads-up with Ford's special Mustang, which I believe they also called a ZL1. It had a radically different hood. Honestly, you should be fine using the LS1 the car came with, as the heads and block on a 1:24 scale are not too different. Then, if you got a Zo6 kit, you could replicate the 400hp ZL1 (which had an LS6, which is externally identical to the LS1) and still have a badass car. The 427 ZL1 would be pretty difficult...unless you can scratch-build this kind of intake setup...

more info

edit: Actually, reading the site it says the 427s used C5R blocks, and Revell does make a C5R...Just out of curiousity, how experienced are you with models? If you truly want to build a ZL1, it's going to involve a lot of scratchwork on the engine!

Re: 2002 Camaro SS

Thanks for the link, and I started doing some research earlier, and found that the ZL1's of today used the all aluminium LS6 motor, which was only 350 ci (5.7 L). The real ZL1 of 69 was an all aluminium 427 ci BBC, and I hope to replicate that, with a modern skin.

The idea I had in my head was to take a modern muscle car and put an old school power house in it. I think what Im going to do is fly with the 427 in the camaro, because thats really what I wanted to do in the first place.

I also fixed the inaccuracy with the front bumper, are their any others that I should know about before I paint?

/edit: I also filled in the line for the T-Tops at the B-Pillar. I looked at a bunch of pics of hardtops, and it seemed like they didnt have them, so I filled it in. If its inaccurate, oh well, I like the look better

Re: 2002 Camaro SS

Question about the wheels, whats the point of having rotors and calipers (comes with the kit) if the wheel connects dont let you see them? Anyways, what do you guys recommend I do?

/edit: I also have some decals from a previous 69 Camaro that Im still currently building (to replicate my dads camaro, the Z11). Anyways, do you think the hockeystick would look good from the 69 on the 02? Or if I want the hockeystick would I have to paint it on by hand?

Re: 2002 Camaro SS

I have a friend who's building the same model too. I agree with the wheel design, it's rather pointless. I would say paint the outer ring of the inner wheel (instruction said to paint it aluminum or silver) black, leaving a little bit of disc to make it look like the rotor, but caliper would have to be left out since it would not be accurate to add them on (custom made) and see them roll with the discs.

Re: 2002 Camaro SS

You could use the wheels off the Z06 model, which would also give you nice racier seats, brakes, and fuel rail covers...but it's a shame to kitbash that one...you can use a small, thin trapezoidal sheet of styrene glued to the wheel side of the inner part to replicate the caliper, and then glue the wheel into place...I've done that one before. I also think the seats would look much better with a flat black or gray center...And dry brushing black on the springs will really make them stand out.

The hockey sticks look great on the 4th gen camaros, there are some on that site I posted (I think there's even one on their homepage)

GMMG did make 69 2002 ZL1's with the 427, but it was a C5R Corvette block (also offered by Revell). Most had the 400hp LS6.

Re: 2002 Camaro SS

I am currently building the 02 model as a 99 model replica of a HO SS (hugger orange SS) to replicate the car i just bought. I'm using wheels from a ZR1 kit with 315's in the back (i have the ZR1 style pre-00 wheel) and plan on getting 315's eventually. I also am planning on using the black hockey sticks on it because that is what i plan on my 1:1 car. I'm sure there's alot i'm forgetting but thought i'd mention it. Might have it painted by this weekend...

Re: 2002 Camaro SS

The grey decals revell gives you with this kit are garbage. I put them on the seat, and it looked so fake. I guess with the shinney interior I was trying to replicate a brand new ebony leather interior, or one thats been taken care of with the Armor All. I really like the way it looks with the gloss black, so I think Im going to keep it. Now I might sponge brush in grey, since Ill be going to the store today, Im oging to pick up some brushable black and grey.

About the hockeysticks, do you think the ones from the 69 camaro kit would line up propery onto the 2002? Thats my only problem, I know they have different body lines, but it looks like it would line up fine. Anyone try this?

/edit: And I plan on brushing the springs black, like you said, just have to get some black in a bottle. I thought I had some, dunno where it went

iv building a 96 camaro a replica of my bros car, and for brakes i just cut out circle pieces of styrene the size of brakes, cut holes so they would fit around the inner wheel, drilled tiny holes for the brake holes and glued them to the connector piece and it looks pretty good

Re: 2002 Camaro SS

Update: Well I puddied most of what I want to puddy, and its on its final coat. I took the wheel connectors off the wheels and painted the outside layer black, and the wheels look 100% better. I also got an idea on what Im going to have to cut on the body. Since the air intake box is molded into the body, I have to cut a good portion out, and remake it via plastic strips and puddy. Should be quite fun.

Re: 2002 Camaro SS

You can make the stripes work but i'm not sur ehow they're going to look. I too am putting hockey sticks on the SS i'm building. I think they're going to come up too high for the fender line on the new body. Lines are a little different than the old one

Re: 2002 Camaro SS

I cut out the LS1 airbox, and am building up a piece of the metal with plastic syical (wtf ever its called lol) as you can see in the pictures.

I had to take off the front bumper inorder to cut out the airbox, because all of my puddy cracked (darnit) from flex and I had to redo that.

I have to reorder the LS1 engine, as the black I used reacted with the silver, causing it to crack all over the place, and the black doesnt come up from brake fluid.
