I'm sure no one is intentionally being offensive (at least not me). I've had the HPPIII for a few months, and the best thing that it had to offer me was the option to change the TSL & shift firmness. You'll definitely notice a difference with the shift firmness. Stock parameters have more lag b/t shifts. If you tried the programmer, you could see the difference.
I think that if any had to recommend (hands-down) which choice to make b/t handheld programmer or custom tune, they'd choose custom tune. The reason being, it's more beneficial for fine-tuning (especially if you've done engine mods).
Good luck with the handheld programmers. They're great for the mild enthusiast. For the "knee deep in performance" enthusiast, odds are, custom tuning is the top choice. We cool?!?!
