Forget the O2 idea..lol, Mine started all over again as if it never even went away, but it did for a day or so. Now I am moving onto the EGR as was mentioned, everything I could find on the net is pointing to the egr and intake manifolds (Leaking or clening them) and vacume problems <--spelling. My buddy is almost convinced that it has something to do with the valves in mine as I have low compression in one Cyl, we wet tested and it looks like valve trouble. But I don't think it is related YET. I will try the EGR tomorrow and move on from there. Keep posting if it comes back, together we may find the problem. Heres what I checked for the power loss issue so far, just so you know what not to try..lol

Changed spark plugs, wires, distributor and coil
Changed PCV and hose
Map sensor 3X
Checked for spark – Good
Changed Fuel pump 2X
Changed Air filter
Checked timing
Changed computer
Changed FI’s
Checked fuel pressure 2X
Checked alternator 2X
Changed fuel filter
Changed O2 sensor

I gotta try to check the codes tomorrow.

It started acting up again tonight for the first time in a week. The difference being my trip was longering tonight and involved some highway driving. Same symptoms, running as if it's misfiring but idling along without stalling. Just idling very roughly at around 700 - 800 RPMs. Put in gear and RPMs drop below 500, no power, it almost stalls but it doesn't. The exhaust spurts and gurgles, when idling, almost like a souped up muscle car.

Get towed home, start it up, runs fine (after sitting for about an hour).

This time though, the "Check Engine Soon" light came on and has stayed on so far. This didn't happen the first time. So I'm hoping the computer has logged more data.

If it is the fuel pump, wouldn't it just die and not start again? Do fuel pumps respond to heat? Any chance it could be the ECM?

The dealer will attempt to further diagnose at no further charge to me so I'll have it in to them on Monday. Just trying to get some more ammo before I do.

Any further advice / suggestions is appreciated as always.

If it is the fuel pump, wouldn't it just die and not start again? Again, I'm just making uneducate guesses but it seems to be more like a spark plug not firing or something like that.

Check the codes, turn key ahead (but dont start it) then back again and count the flashes. See what it says for a code.

12 Battery or computer recently disconnected

43 Peak primary coil current not achieved with max dwell time
OR
43 Cylinder misfire
OR
43 Problem in power module to logic module interface

Looks like it might be a cylinder misfiring? Not sure what the battery disconnect is all about. I haven't since I've owned it. Or could it just be registering a 43 due to a lack of fuel?

This is just way too similar to what is happening to me. It's got to be the fuel pump and/or filter. I wonder if I should do the fuel filter myself first and then test it out. If the filter does not do the trick, have the pump replaced.

Thoughts?

Upon visual inspection of the fuel filter (once removed) will it be obvious whether or not this was the cause?

You could try turning the filter upside down (The end which pointed to the gas tank being down) into a small clean white bucket or paper towel, then you can see if there was any dirt in it or bad gas (discolored). When I change my filter I usually turn the key ahead (with the line still dissconnected ) to pump a bit of gas out of the line, I do this a few times before putting the new filter on, just to rid and rust or dirt that may have been in the line behind the filter. You can also try blowing through the filter and see if there is much resistance in there. Blowing through a new pump would be almost the same as blowing through a large straw. If there is quite a bit (as there usually is in old filters) then that could have been part of the problem if not the whole problem. Visually you probably wouldn't notice anything where the filter is encased. Hope this helps.

I talked to 2 mechanics and the dealer and none of them recommended replacing just the filter so I had both the pump and the filter replaced.

Took it for a 45 minute highway cruise, everything seems fine now.

I actually had the dealer do the work, they felt bad for me and gave me cost on the parts and a discount on the labour. Saved me a few hundred bucks. Still cost me $600 CDN though. Oh well, at least this nightmare is over.

Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions.

Re: Help Please! 97 Voyager issues...

Happy to hear you got it fixed. And happier to see you posted THE fix as many other people seem not to bother doing. It may help many other people better this way.
I can get a brand new pump assembly on ebay for about 30 bux, so maybe i'll try it one more time.
