Yeah, I hear you and know what you're saying about an accurate test. First I have nowhere 400 miles from here I want or need to go so that's out. I've already "purified" my tank to one brand of gas and just added about 5oz to a tankfull. I'll just do my normal thing as that's what I'm trying to see: if it makes a differance doing my normal thing. Either it'll make a differance or not. If I don't see at least a 3mpg improvement, I'll drop it at that point. If I do, I'll consider making it routine and do a whole heap more research on the net and anywhere else I can get a straight answer.
As for brushing straight acetone of stuff for a few days, I'l pass on that one, especially since I'm only using a 640 to 1 mixture or less for a couple of tanks. I might try the Berrymans for a tank and see what happens as well. Either way, I will also stop after a couple of tanks to see if it goes down or what. I think I'm also going to run a poll on who uses what gas (this should really stir the pot a bit!!).

Re: Acetone in Fuel, part 2

Since I've already tried this, and I don't care if my engine blows up or not, its already my 2nd one, here's my input.

I'm not sure about how concentrated acetone must be before it is considered to be at a "safe" level to use for things like this. I do however believe that if acetone is so strong when mixed in gasoline, or motor oil, that the additives that it's mixed with in fuel treatment (B-12) cant be making it any less strong. I do know however, that the 3.5 oz i put in my tank didnt hurt anything. I think it cleaned my fuel system very well. THe mileage has stayed close to what it was when running the acetone, and this is my 2nd tank without it added. I will probably run one more with it, just not quite as high a mixture, and change the fuel filter and see how it runs. I'm not going to add it every tank full, I'm using it as a injector/fuel system cleaner and I think that it is fine when used for that purpose. I don't really know anything about this kind of stuff, chemicals and all, but I do have real world facts to consider. This is just my opinion...it doesn't mean much.

And please, NO MORE POLLS!!!!! pleeeeeeease?

Re: Re: Acetone in Fuel, part 2

keep in mind the solvents in injector cleaner were not meant to be used on a daily basis. constant use of solvents can disolve the coating on injector coils. about $500 worth of them in your truck. will this happen? don't know. have i been wrong before, yeah but don't tell my wife.

Re: Acetone in Fuel, part 2

Here is my experience. Back when gas was stupid high, I tried 6oz per full tank (20gal) on my work beater. First, some backround info on my work beater, 1990 caravan 3.0L, got it with 38k miles last summer, now has 78k miles. Yes, it is a $1500 work car, but I still rely on it so I keep up on maintence items. I started the Acetone and immediately saw 2-3 mpg increase for the first three tanks, so I stopped checking it and just drove it everyday, 100 miles per day, like always. After about a month I noticed sluggishness when I stomped on her--like a O2 sensor going. I replaced the original O2 sensor at 74k miles and it drove the same. I had to go to Columbus on business 425 miles round trip, I checked my mileage for the first time in awile, cause I wanted to see if this lack of power was huring me--I got 27.5 MPG! This minivan never got better than 25MPG with the Acetone. Got her home and decided to change the fuel filter (which did have 30k on it), filter was plugged. New filter regained my power, but mileage is back down to 24-25 MPG with the Acetone. Was at 22-23 MPG before Acetone. Is it worth it? I stopped using it now that gas is $1.92/gallon. Did it plug my fuel filter? possibly, did it improve mileage? definately, did it do long term damage? who cares, it is a beater. Point is, I would not put it in my Silverado, wifes Trailblazer, or even my tractor.

Re: Acetone in Fuel, part 2

I feel like even if it didn't increaes my MPG, that it cleaned the fule system really good.

I tried a tankful with 8 oz of acetone back in October. My mileage has averaged about 16.2 for the past year and a half before trying it. With acetone, it was actually a tad worse on a hi-way trip of about 240 miles RT.

Funny thing is, it's been steadily getting better since, and I only dosed that one tankful. My average mileage has improved to 16.5, And today I did a 440 mile RT and got about 17.2 and that was doing 70-80mph whenever I could.

I may try a very small amount (2 oz) to see if a low concentration does anything.

They say the smaller the dose, the better.

I haven't used any since the original test, but my overall mileage (long-term - I never reset it) is up to 16.7.

One thing to note, I'm not buying gas at Hess anymore, I've been using Mobil & other.

Re: Acetone in Fuel, part 2

I'm using 3 oz per tank. It didn't help any with Chevron or Shell, but when I went back to ARCO (which in this area is moonshine gas) it's bolstered it up by 2-3 mpg. Go figure??? I'm also not too concerned about 3 oz of acetone in with 25 gallons of gas as far as damage issues goes.
