I dont like Autotrader. I found about three cars there that looked awesome. Went to check them out, one didn't start, one flat out didn't have a motor, and the third, well...in the picture the car was blue, when I went to see it, the bumper was blue, and that was about it...dont get me started on the rest of the car.

Re: Under 5k

You dont sound like you are considering hondas, i guess you think they are rice maybe? seriously though for the money and gas mileage they are hard to beat. Start with a crx hf, swap in a b18 or b20 run about 8lbs of boost with a super 60 and have a 13 sec car for under 5 grand. and still get 25mpg. I hate when ppl dont consider hondas as an option, at first i wanted an lt1 camaro but cost too much, high insurance and bad mpg. vw are ok but parts are pretty expensive. Just consider all the options.

Re: Under 5k

I'd say put 5K down on a SRT4 and just make 200 dollar monthly payments on it if you can do that. For that amount of horsepower you can't find a cheaper car. A 2003 SRT4 you can find one for about 17,000 and it goes 0-60 in 5.8 seconds AND it responds to mods well so I would do that..... maybe put some nitrous on that bitch lol

Re: Under 5k

Alright man, it depends on what you really want. With a budget under 4k if what you want is to go fast cheap, then my first two recommendations are a 5.0 Mustang or a Toyota MR2 Turbo.

In regards to the Mustang, I am a Ford guy and a bit biased obviously, but I just bit on a 1988 5.0LX hatchback with 110,000 original miles on it for $1,600. That my friend is a hard deal to beat.

The paint is a bit rough but the car is straight, untouched as far as mods go, and mechanically pretty sound. It could use a new set of tires, a serious tune up, and it has a cheapo replacement exhaust on it...but these are all areas I would plan to redo anyway and should be first on any "modification" list. All these "shortcomings" really did was make the price of the car cheaper for me.

No car anywhere has an aftermarket like the 5.0L Fox bodies do and if you can't make one of these things run 12's for real cheap you aren't trying. Some people dont like the look, and while they aren't as everywhere as they once were this is not the best way to be different since there are a lot of Fox body V-8's around. This is good since it created that ridiculous aftermarket, but can also be bad depending on how you look at it.

If the import scene is your thing I would go with an MR2 Turbo. These things can be had amazingly cheap, and unless seriously abused are pretty reliable even in careless hands. They are also light and turbocharged......this means cheap speed in any language.

Other cars like MkIII Supra Turbos, etc. come to mind but most are either kinda pricey for your budget, heavy, would cost a lot more to mod...you get the idea. As for people recommending Honda's, etc.....if you like them then by all means buy one. But, IMO you will spend a lot of money just trying to make the typical Civic or CRX as fast as a stock or mildly tweaked 5.0 or MR2 Turbo and the Hona's don't tend to be any cheaper to buy in my experience. Also, the Mustang and the MR2 are both likely to get you a lot more street cred in certain crowds if that matters to you.

Nobody go off or anything, I'm not "hatin" just saying it how it is.

agreed. the old ones aren't as sexy as the newer ones, however some of those still go for $40,000. i don't have that kinda money to spend on my race car. (i'm also in the market for a 5k quarter runner/racer). the old ones are still pretty fast though, that inline 6 has lots of power. since beggers can't be choosers, you can either have a car that looks nice outside or is fast on the inside, unfortuntaly not both for 5k. the late 80's supras will probably be the fastest things you can get for 5k. 24mpg stock is not too encouraging with todays gas prices though.

the 5.0 stangs are fast as hell but the have got to be the ugliest mustang i have ever seen. ford shouldn't be allowed to call something that ugly a mustang.

don't get a honda crx. if you do, get one that is 100% riced out. not just the shitty boddy work and wal-mart mulfer but hopefully with some forced air too. remember: people that have spent tonnes of money on their car rarley get any of it back on resale. they usually loose most of it. if you want rice, get one from someone who's getting rid of their ricer. all the work will be done for you and if it has some performance parts it might be already to race.

on a final note directed to everyone else: i agree if someone comes here and asks a legit question, either give a legit answer or STFU.

I think the "IMPORTANT:FAQ: What car to buy" in the thread title might have confused him.

In case Hooked on Phonics doesn't work, here's a link.

Re: Under 5k

In the most recent SCC, they had five cars that all cost about 5-6k and were running pretty good times...

syr74 said it best, an excellent suggestion. I'm thinking this guy is probably going VW or Honda though.

Re: Under 5k

Dsm Brotha.... You can get a 1st or 2nd gen Turbo DSM for around that price, and with mod money they can turn it monsters. Take a 3 grand Eagle Talon TSIAWD or a Plymouth Laser RS-AWD, and dump about 2 grand into it, and your doing low 13's, possible high 12's. (by buying a boost controller, intake, downpipe. exhaust, and tuning software. And if you do your own work.) OR you can just take the entire 5 grand and purchase a 2G Eclipse or Talon and as long as its turbo, your gonna be decently quick. And throw in AWD......

Like Sport Compact Car said, "Look funny at the 4G63 and it'll make more power."
