Ok, Ok.

A customer of mine had his car towed into my shop a few days ago for a no start problem.

He had jumped the car to start and figured he had a bad battery. So far so good right?

He had gone to Walmart and bought a battery and installed it him self. Then it still wont start. So he tows it in and I go out to jump the car and get it into the shop.

There, in front of my eyes was a top post battery with the terminals installed over the red and black plastic protectors! Can you say no contact = no start?

Re: Dumb People shouldnt work on cars...

here's one

This guy asked me to look at his car it was smoking a bit he told me. ( It was only six months old ) I asked him if he had done anything to it lately and he told me "I just changed the oil." He started it up and it looked like a mosquito fogger. I asked him how much oil he put in it and he said, "I filled it up." Well he did allright.....all the way to the filler cap and the oil was running up through the pvc valve into the air breather, etc.....

btw He was an Army mechanic

Thats pretty scary. I had someone go into a parts store (as a prank, I knew the manager...) to get a heater core for a 69 vw bug, its funny to watch new parts people scramble to find one. And Rallysport, consider yourself lucky my wife isn't reading this, she's quite capable of holding her own, and she's usually the one to pick up parts for me and knows what she needs to get.

Re: Dumb People shouldnt work on cars...

You know its amazing about the oil thing because some lady brought her car to my shop because it wouldnt start i ask her what happend she says she checked the oil and it was very low so she went and bought 10 qts and filled it up i said 10 qts are you nuts so i pull the dip stick out it was filled all the way to the top i could not beleive it so i drain the oil and i didnt put any in and finaly after a few cranks it started man was smokin like a chimney so i pull the drain plug back out got another 1 1/2 quarts more out. man this lady really messed that car up. LOL

well... this thread makes me feel stupid because I don't know much about engines but some of this stuff should be very common sense, like there was one guy who had a new car drove it for 17k miles and his engine was always knocking so my pal goes to check it out... as it turns out he had not changed the oil once since he bought it.

Re: Dumb People shouldnt work on cars...

its the middle of winter and this guy brings his truck in because it wont start, well by the time we get time to look at it, the things fires right up no problem, so were are like wtf?? well the next morning he calls us and says it wont start again, he brings it in and the same thing by the time we get to it it starts. this time we asked him what he has done to it recently, he says he just did and oil change. well we come to find out after looking in his truck bed that hes was using super-heavy weight oil and it was in the teens and was so cold that his truck would just not start, but after sitting in our heated garage it would fire right up no problem.

Re: Dumb People shouldnt work on cars...

Not that I would ever do it, but what happens to the engine when there is too much oil in it? (obviously too little means too mcuh friction and shit grinds and chips.)

Re: Dumb People shouldnt work on cars...

to much oil and your crank just spins, and doesnt do whats its supposed to, plus the oil gets into places it shouldnt and messes up other stuff to

Least damage: trash a set of plugs. Its also possible to blow gaskets and seals, bend rods (oil built up on top of piston causing hydrolock), cat converter, fire, pretty much wreck your day.

overfilling your engine with oil, would cause the oil to foam, therefore ruining its lubricating abilities therefore making your engine a big paperweight
