Re: 1994 Impala SS

Let the chrome grille soak in some Clorox bleach for about 15 minutes and the chrome should be removed.

Re: 1994 Impala SS

Thanks tonio. LOL. Well everyone, this project has now screeched to a grinding halt. Must let the paint dry. Ran into a large problem today. The paint FLOODED massively and bubbled in some areas. I'll try and get pictures tonight. It looks pretty good on one side, and the other side is all messed up. Would anyone care to help me by telling me how to fix this flooding/bubbling issue?? Greatly appriciated...

4 words: EASIER. SAID. THAN. DONE. Sand down with what grit though? If it's too smooth, it'll be a waste of energy/sand paper, if it's too rough, it'll take off all the paint and then require me to smooth it out... I think I'm just going to put this on hold, and work on my Chevelle. Get that thing back to looking good.

Re: 1994 Impala SS

You're right. I shouldn't. But I ran into ANOTHER problem. I never noticed this AT ALL! Near the rear window, the roof is warped!!!! It's caved in!

Re: 1994 Impala SS

Ack! I never ran into these problems on my 9c1 conversion (which I'm gonna do a tutorial on soon btw ....I would honestly start completely over, esp because of the cave-in in the roof. Dunk it in CSC for a few days, and when you're back to bare plastic, you can either see about popping the dent out (if possible) or filling it in with body filler (if it won't pop out.)

If by bubbling you mean a fish-eye kinda result, that's usually because of particulate under the paint... you can normally sand down to just the primer and do it over, but I think in your case I'd start over.

Re: 1994 Impala SS

Where can I get CSC? And what exactly is it? Is it a paint thinner?

Re: 1994 Impala SS

i'd also like to see this one completed...the paint is just too cool lol

CSC is Castrol Super Clean. You can find it at most Automotive Shops. An alternative would be to dip the model in 99% alcohol that you can find at drugstores, or dip it in DOT 3 brake fluid. All three methods strip the paint.

Re: 1994 Impala SS

Indeed.

Best bet is CSC as it's slightly safer than brake fluid. Get a shoebox-sized tupperware container, dump the whole bottle of CSC in it (you can re-use the fluid pretty much infinitely) and leave the body in it. Take it out after a day or so, scrape a buncha paint off, dunk it again for another day, repeat., etc.

Re: 1994 Impala SS

The first few pics are x's now. I'd love to see those wheels others are ranting about. I love the color. I can't see the 'bubbles/flooding' you were talking about, the finish looks pretty good. However, it does seem that you added a few thick coats instead of opting for the many light mist coats. You can see the white showing from under the paint as well as some uneven spots where the paint is darker in some spots. (well maybe it's just the lighting). Either way good job so far.

bummer about the roof ...if all else fails, a convertible would be something different to do. Also, you could try to replace with some putty/styrene and then just cover it up with that vinyl top material from modelcargarage (it hides blemishes well).
