Have data for two:

92 Metro Ragtop
3 cyl 5 speed
105K miles
Avg. 40-43 MPG Mostly highway, around 65-75 MPH

Had to park that car, body is rotting away.

Bought a 91 Metro ragtop
3 cyl. Automatic
133K miles
Avg 30-32 MPG Mostly highway, around 65-75 MPH

I'm a little disappointed in the 91, but there's a problem somewhere, it idles around 2K in Park and surges a lot. I'm gonna replace the O-2 sensor and if that doesn't help, gonna pull the throttle body off the 92 and stick it on there. No vacuum leaks or anything, haven't figured it out yet. However, the stick runs around 3700 RPMs at 70 MPH, but the automatic runs around 4500 RPMs at 70 MPH. I understand that the autos get about 25% worse mileage than the sticks.

Thumbs up

Year Geo Made - 1998 (Okay, so it's not a "Geo" anymore) HB 5spd 128Kmiles
Miles per Gallon - 39-49
Type of driving - 60/40 hwy/cty+AC is the low end. The high end is strictly hwy w/no AC.
Comments - I can not complain. Our "family car" is a '97 Powerstroke (Ford's diesel pickup). It gets 18mpg on a good day. If I want power, I drive the pickup. If I want cheap, I drive the Metro. Love it!
(and it fits in our garage next to the pickup. --Moved the riding lawnmower out and the Metro in. )

Question

I'm noticing most of you have 5spds that are getting really good mileage.

I've always felt my mpg is a little low. I have a 96 automatic. I know that a 3hr trip to my mom's house 206 away (averaging ~70 mph on freeway)miles leaves enough gas left over in the tank for trips around town for a few days. The tank capacity is 10.5 gallons according to the manual , so even accounting for a conservative 7 gallons used for the 206 miles that's still only under 30mpg.... does seem right to any of you?

Could I have something wrong that is affecting my milage?

I take good care of the car with regular oil changes and tune up checks, it only has 83,000 miles on it as I only use it on weekends or maybe once or twice a month to visit my mom.

After replacing the O-2 sensor and setting the idle screw down in the throttle body, I now get 35 MPG out of my 91 Metro Ragtop (Automatic) don't think I'll get anything better out of it. I believe that the automatics get 30% worse MPG than the 5-speeds. My 92 5-speed was giving a consistent 40-41 MPG when it was on the road.

Well, yes & no...the automatic's final drive ratio is quite a bit lower (higher numerically) than the 5 speed, & because it's a rag top, you have a heavier frame. If you've got a 4 cyl, the 35 mpg is not that bad, but a three banger should hit the low 40's on the highway. (I just picked up a '90 myself). Check all of the usual suspects. (air cleaner plugged, worn plugs & plug wires, plugged pcv, set tire pressure @ max. rated psi, be sure that your brakes aren't dragging, etc). Check your compression...the 3 bangers are notorious for burning up exhaust valves. If all of this is ok, you can pick up a few more mpg by advancing the timing 3 degrees & disconnecting your air cleaner from the cold air inlet. (Just remove the clamp on the inlet horn so that you are breathing air from under the hood, but save it, if you start to knock under load, you'll have to replace it). Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips there Doug7x. I did replace a lot of the stuff you said, plugs, wires, air cleaner. I'll try the other stuff and let you know. The idle won't come down any more, I wonder if the EGR could be clogged up . It's the 3 banger. Oh and it's leaking oil up high in the front somewhere.

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

I have a 94 Metro wit 28k on it and it still runs great. However, I do keep it up well and change its oil alot. It still maintains about 50 mpg on highways and about 45 mpg in town. Most of the time I have the A/C on too. This little car runs great and I've never had any trouble wit it.

137,000 miles

'95 Metro 3cyl Manual 1.0L

My last check of my gas mileage was 45 mpg on the highway. Wish I could get it higher. Thats driving around 60 mph. One of the cylinders has 25 lbs less compression. Could that be causing lower gas mileage?

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

1995 1.3 L , 91000 miles. Without AC which lowers the mileage a lot, I get 32 in mixed driving, 38 at 65 on highway and 34.5 at 75 on highway. Evidently the 1.3 L gets 10-12 mpg less than the 1.0 L. Forgot to mention, it has an automatic transaxle.

I've only had the car for a month, but the lowest I've had was 44.6, and the highest was 48.6

The car is a 95 1.0L 5 spd with 91000 miles on it.

95% of my driving is on the highway at about 75-80. The only mod I have is the rust mod to the muffler giving it the sound of a 'fart can' muffler.

Re: Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

1990 Metro 1.0 5 spd
JDM motor just installed about 25k in miles
on 2nd tank full ( after dumping injector cleaner)
I only been getting 30 to 35 mpg???
I do drive fast and it has been hot as hell here so the A/C is maxed all of the time'
And a question -- my fuel gauge will not bury the needle when it is full about a 16th in away from full -- so I have never put more than 7.5 gallons in .. Are the tanks for this only 10 gal.?
