I test-drove both last July, and I liked the Mazda3 better. Yeah, the tC is reliable, pretty good on gas, and unique, but the Mazda just handled better, shifted smoother, and felt faster. Plus, I appreciate the practicality, lower insurance, and added stealth that come with driving a sedan. You can get either one out the door for under 17K. The tC has more feature content and a smoother ride - it's a lot like a miniature Lexus - but the Mazda3 has it beat in driving dynamics and all-around performance. Take your pick, those are my top two recommendations as well.

If I were in your position, I'd get the tC.
I own a Celica GT-S, and I really love my car.. but the insurance is killer.

id pick the tc..looks good..performs well...TONS of options...for only 16k...what other car gives you standard 17" chromes, moonroof, and a pretty good sound system...add onto that toyotas reliability..my pick , take the tc
