Yeah but i dont think they'll have the same fate as Sega because of that... Sega only made consoles and games. I wish Sega was still makin consoles cause they were way ahead of their time... Sega always inovated. They were the first console to have internet connectivity (i used to always play NBA and NFL games on multiplayer, in 1999!) They were the first to have screens on their controlers, which Nintendo is going to do now on the Revolution. They were the first to use CDs for their games (SegaCD) etc. etc. IMO they were the best gaming company around.... too bad |

Big agreement with the Sega fans (although NEC's TurboGrafx/TurboDuo family hold the title as first mass market CD-based game consoles -- but Sega did it much better!) I'll always be a Sega fan first. And despite the troubles they had in the past (32X support and whatnot) I'd still jump on a new system if they released it -- 'cause I love my Saturn and Dreamcast, and Sega's always been a pioneer. Nintendo relies on their varied and time-tested empire, but they aren't exactly the game pioneers they once were. Microsoft is backed up by their sheer overwhelming resources, their system really isn't anything special (it's like it doesn't know what it wants to be -- a computer? a home entertainment system? a videogame system?) Most XBOX games come to the PC anyways (which usually does them better, except for Halo... yuck!) And Sony -- while a solid company and the undisputed leader right now -- they do (and have for some time) had some serious issues with playing nicely. I've never owned a single Sony product that doesn't require some sort of add-on or hack to be able to utilize certain 3rd party features -- if it's even possible, and you aren't completely locked into their proprietary BS. Betamax, Sony Memory sticks, inability of my Sony DVD player to play cd-r disks (something most $50 players can do.) Hell, EVERY console system since the N64 has allowed you to do 4 player right out of the box -- except Sony. As a mater of fact, I'm STILL puzzled as to how Sony became the videogame behemoth they are today, what with the degree to which they jerk their customers around.
Anywho (before I continue further into the same rant I've been spewing since the mid 90's) I'll move on. This new handheld battle reminds me of the Lynx/GameGear/Gameboy wars of over a decade ago. Only this time, it's GameBoy AdvDS/PSP/and whatever that other one is (Nokia or something?) The thing I've been wondering about for the past few years is, could the industry be setting itself up for another fall reminiscent of the early 80's? I mean, honestly, how much saturation can the market take? TWO GameBoys, the PSP, that Nokia handheld, and then GameCube, XBOX, PS2, and now news of the NEXT gen systems! To be honest with you (and maybe it's just because I've grown up or something) I'm just not as interested in the medium as I used to be. There's just TOO MUCH out there. How can people afford all this stuff? I just can't understand what would possess someone to spend $500 on a handheld videogame system that is just one more addition into the already crowded market of electronics that'll play movies, play videogames, let you talk to people, play mp3's, view pictures, organize information, and whatever else the new technology can provide. I just can't shake the feeling that items like the PSP are just the same damn thing everyone else is offering, just rehashed, repackaged, repriced, and renamed. This glut can only last so long.

Re: i gots mine, who gots theirs??
I agree... but are you sure turbographx 16 had CDs first? I just remember them having games with those cards (looked like credit cards)
and i think Game Gear DESTROYED Game Boy.. it was way ahead of its time with the color. I cant believe Sega died, they were easily the best gaming company out there |

Nokia N-gage is no competition, that thing flopped faster than the Neo Geo Pocket Color did.
I can't wait till the PSP has been thoroughly hacked, just imagine emulating SNES games on it... that's why this system has such an edge over the DS. Hackers are already creating programs for the PSP, its gonna be sweet once they figure out the hardware. But it still stumps me why people dish out so much cash for games that are already out dated. |

Yup, the TurboGrafx system used what were called "HuCards" But there was a CD system added later, first as an add on to the core TG16, then as the upgraded TurboDuo (which itself has several versions, the last having upgraded memory and the ability to play CD-roms, SuperCD's, and of course all the HuCard versions.)
Sega did indeed own all in its hayday. The Gamegear, while not the FIRST color pocket system (Atari's Lynx holds that title) nonetheless was very successful in its own right, what with TVtuners and screen magnifiers, and all sorts of accessories. Of course, the mofo feasted on batteries like no tomorrow, but that's understandable considering the active color screen. Sure, my NeoGeo Pocket Color is a lot better on batteries, but the screen isn't backlit (yes I own a NGPC, and yes I, like many others, was absolutely livid as to the reason why the thing went under, simply because it flat out OWNED the GameBoy Color, it's just that SNK's situation wasn't exactly pretty at the time, and Nintendo just romped all over that.) And as far as people hacking the PSP, I wouldn't doubt it for a second. That's what initally boosted the PS One's popularity -- the ease with which games could be developed for it (coincidentally the Achilles Heel of the Saturn, as it's dual-processor setup reportedly made game programming quite a chore.) Supposedly the PS2 was much more of a bear to develop for, but the PSP is a different animal. Well, it's like I said earlier, all the power to anyone successful in hacking a Sony product to allow it to perform outside of it's inevitably tight restraints.

Re: i gots mine, who gots theirs??
SNES emulation, huh? I think a portable SNES system would make me seriously consider the PSP.

Re: i gots mine, who gots theirs??
I will be getting mine when my local game store gets its next shipment(they said in about a week). The web browsing thing is true and it is with the game "Wipeout Pure." Here is one of the links about it:

Re: i gots mine, who gots theirs??
LOL Thats exactly why i bought the battery pack for the GameGear. It was like $50, but it was worth it cause you could just recharge it all the time. Saved me soooooooooo much money on batteries.

Re: i gots mine, who gots theirs??
i had a NGPC i loved that thing. TG-16 CD add on was one best things i ever bought at a police auction. Bought for 30 bucks (about 2 years ago) then sold on ebay for 200. If the psp can emulate nes/snes i would buy one for sure. That would be awesome.
Just gotta wait for them to work out all the bugs
