Re: Stupid question, can i hook my subs up to my stereo in my room?
yea do a BIG ported box tuned LOW (like 22-25 hz) and you could get some decent in room response out of them......wont' be anything great but definately decent.

Re: Stupid question, can i hook my subs up to my stereo in my room?
you can always use an old car battery hooked up to a charger. Ive done it.just dont set it to jump. and exspect something to wear out sooner or later. probably the charger.

Comp.audio sys
I once ran a 250w jl amp off of my psu and an 8" jl sub under my desk. Worked like a charm. Bolted the amp right to my tower. looked pretty slick actualy. I never lost a psu. I'm actualy planning on doing it again in the near future.

Re: Stupid question, can i hook my subs up to my stereo in my room?
Sounds like my work bench. It should work just fine. Never tried running a 500 w amp off of one but I had my 250w amp hooked up to the psu in the computer along with everything else and it didd'nt cause any probs, so just using the psu for the amp and nothing else should work out fine.

Re: Stupid question, can i hook my subs up to my stereo in my room?
I didn't see you mention hooking a car amp to a 110V but I did see sub in home. Then again, I didn't read every thread. You could get a 110V amp made for home systems and just send the speaker wire to your sub. I don't know if the ohms matter but I don't know a lot about this either. Makes sense to me.

Re: Stupid question, can i hook my subs up to my stereo in my room?
yes, even a decent 300w plate amp can run mid $100's-$300.... so far PartsExpress.com is the cheapest as far as plate amps i have found, Adire makes a good one for pretty cheap, like $250 for an Ava250 (i think that is what they are called)....but if you have an amp lying around a $20 PSU is a better option...

Re: Stupid question, can i hook my subs up to my stereo in my room?
My dad is an electriction and power inverters convert dc to ac a power converter converts ac to dc i've been nagged on about that many a time. Also they do make lager scale power converters but 1. there hard to find and 2. there way out of budget. The plate amp sounds like a good idea and i'm thinking about buying one my self i've always wanted to hook a car stero up in a small romm in my house. I have a friend that hooked 6 solo barck s7's up behind a couch and watched movies with them when ever a bomb dropped or any thing with loud bass hit the couch would move.
About the computer power suply you could daisy chain a few of them but that might get spendy if you can't get them free and i still wouldn't trust it power suply's arn't made for long heavy loads except for the really expensive one's but for any one in the future that might want to daisy chain a few (mind you they don't mind spending money) enermax is an amazing power suply.

Re: Stupid question, can i hook my subs up to my stereo in my room?
you wouldnt daisy chain them...unless you daisy chaing 4 3v outs or 3 5v outs. you wire the 12v outs in parallel. and i have 2 wired in parallel in my room at the moment, i send my amp into protect before i shut down 2 300w power supplies with a sony 444....only thing that does suck about cheap power supplies is that they have thermal circut breakers, which means if they over heat the breaker trips and you have to let it cool down if you want to go into another heavy bass session. but then agian they have to be running HARD for an hour or so before that happens. i am geting 144w out of my amp (i am now below reccomended load, lowest recccomended is 2ohm an i am at 1, oh well) but today i am going to see if i can get more power from a 4ohm impeadence (like i was before) because i am thinking of getting an atlas 15 for HT use....

Re: Stupid question, can i hook my subs up to my stereo in my room?
just an FYI
with 2 300w power supplies and an in efficent sony 444 i did 33.2w into a nominal impeadence of 4ohm. for thoes that cant count that is 275w...but it was clipping more than i would like so i have the gain turned down a tad more and it is running 28v into a nominal 4ohm load giving me 196w stable. but only god knows what my true impeadence, especially around tuning, im thinking about braking out the good multimeter and going and geting a 10ohm non inductave resistor and try plotting my impeadence in 1Hz incraments.... we will see. but now that i am getting nearly 200w i am seriosly considering an atlas 15 for HT duty. |
