I managed to get my 1200Mhz Athlon Thunderbird to 1553 before I started having problems.

Hmm, I guess you don't know what the hell watercooling is. Watercooling has special blocks for the AGP/PCI cards. It uses a pump to pump water threw cooling blocks that are on the CPU, and other main components

Watercooling is also hella pricey.

How about liquid nitrogen? Some guys got their 2.2ghz P4 to 3.7ghz.

Really? I didn't know they made water cooling blocks for the PCI and AGP. Neat stuff!

And not too long ago I found another liquid cooling option for the entire mobo. I was watching The Screensavers and they bought some liquid from 3M that is totally non-conductive. I don't remember the name of it, but they submerged the mobo in it and ran the fluid through dry ice to cool it. Needless to say there is a point that is too cold for the CPU.

Bigger is better. Copper is better than aluminum. Fins are good. Thermal paste is also good (like Arctic Silver). If you look at some sites that are focused on cooling, you should get an idea.
Try the ViaArena forums for help also, there are lots of links and help here

Overclocking will be gravy if it goes well, keeping all the components cool is necessary, but when you overclock you run all the components above design specification (although rebadging does happend, its normally not something we assume is done).

When running above the design specification your creating a higher error rate, although the faster clock may lead to quick repair of the error produce, but over a prolong period or a freak accident can actually cause data failure, which can spread across to ram and hard drives.

That's why critical pcs or servers aren't overclock simply for this reasons, basically overclocking is great but should only be done with caution and through lots of education of the goods and bad.

Im thinking of overclocking my athalon XP, even though it is a 2700, lol. Dont ask me why, i dont really know, by benchmarkign standards, its already extremely high. its running nice and cool right now with the stock amd heatsink and fan, around 40 degrees C, or about 100-105 degrees F. Thats just something im thinking of, dont know if i will.
