Ok. I owned a 99 SL. I traded it into the same dealership where i bought it from for a 98 VR4. MY INSURANCE DID NOT GO UP. I owned my vr4 around 1 year. YOU JUST HAVE TO KNOW THE RIGHT INSURANCE COMPANIES. I guess it helps my mom does insurance but nevertheless. When u switch from a base/sl to a vr4, let me know how ur insurance goes till then...don't worry about it.

A SL shows up to the insurance company as a 3.0L v6 DOHC engine. A vr4 shows the same to the company I had. Why? Who knows. Some companies don't know the different trims I guess or My company was retarded.

I also thought insurance would be killer when i switched. Take in the AWD and TT v6 and u'd think it's a killer combo. Well it wasn't for me and my experience.

As far as a loan goes. Yeah get a 4 year loan on a 94 car and pay 12% APR financing a year if u want. The point was, anything higher than 3 ur gonna seriously pay for it. May I ask what ur current financial situation is on ur current vehicle? Is it on a loan? Do u still owe on it?

Re: Vr4 Baby

going from a base/sl to a VR4 will most definitely make your insurance go up (unless you are carrying liability only)

Every vehicle has a "symbol". The symbol determines how expensive the full coverage will be. Symbols go from 1-9 and then A-Z. The closer to 1, the less expensive the car, the closer to Z, the more expensive. A Base/SL has a symbol of M or something a 91-96 VR4 has a symbol of S. a 97+ VR4 has a symbol V.

It will go up.

Yah real civil.

Did u read my post???

i was stating what i experienced and i wanted to see someone elses experience from switching cars.

Now since i'm such a fucking toolbag, what part of that did u not understand? I'm tired of your attitude. Chill out. You don't know me and I dont' know you. I don't have a problem with you and you shouldn't with me. It's the internet. I was simply stating what i experienced and maybe he should check and get a quote on himself from different companies and see.

PS> Stop responding to what i say to people and taking it in as your own damn business.

a little from both sides here....

i'll side with Jag that upgrading 3/S trims might not affect insurance. yes, sometimes insurance companies can get mixed up and not know the full engine power. But contrary to what we (consumers) would think, insurance is not based upon the horsepower of the engine.

Gateway could back me up on this. He just briefly described the "rating" system that insurance companies use to evaluate the price to insure a certain car. This rating is based upon many different variables, one of which is price/availability of parts and the price it takes to repair vehicles. Common sense tells us that import cars would be more expensive to repair b/c their parts are imported, and thus are more expensive than parts made domestically for domestic cars. Take this case in point:

I had the opportunity to sell my 93 3000GT base and get a 94 Camaro Z28...and i would have saved $70 on insurance per month if i were to have gotten the Z28! i was confused, so i asked the insurance lady, and she told me about this rating system. i even threw in the fact that the Z28 had a 5.7L V8 and was around 300+hp. Still she maintained that it would be cheaper to insure the domestic Z28 rather than the import 3000GT, based on the variables calculated in the rating system.

So just b/c your upgrading cars, upgrading engines, etc. doesn't NECESSARILY mean insurance will go up. You should take into account the YEAR of the car as well (most likely a newer car will cost more the repair than an older car).

And i agree with the Moderators: keep it civil guys.

Re: Vr4 Baby

I will guarantee you that going from a base/sl to a vr4 will increase your insurance rates. the ONLY reason why it would not is 1) you are carrying liability only or 2) the insurance company didn't get the VIN right and thinks it's still a base/sl.

I will bet 10 years of salary on it.

Just out of my own curiousity...what does a vr4 show up as on insurance...? I confirmed it once again last night with my mother in illinois that I had full coverage on both cars. Once again, maybe I was just lucky but I still think the car went on as a 3.0L v6 DOHC. What I find so interesting was when the car was totaled and the guy was asking what options the car came with, he had no idea it came TT and with AWD AWS. Even though the badge on the side of the 98 vr4 in the black are says "TWIN TURBO." But uh yeah.

Re: Vr4 Baby

I checked my insurance policy and my vr4 shows up as this:
1996 Mitsu 3000 Gt Vr+2h

An easy way to solve this would be for someone to go to progressive or geiko's website and get policy quotes for both a vr4 and an SL using identical info for both quotes, with the exception of the trim being different...and then it would solve this.

Alright, thanks for taking the time to get the numbers Gateway...I'll consider this closed unless anyone else has anything worthwhile to add.
