Re: Maxima vs. Sentra

maybe you should run a compression check on the engine to make sure it's alright(i'm sure it is) and take it easy on the engine til you get that bad gas out, (you're making it seem like the max is a slouch ). that or go to autozone and throw in an octane booster/injector treatment for the time being.

i think it's wierd your parents owners manual says to use 89 or better. the book for my 2k2 says 91 or better. we don't have 91 here so i use 93 or 94.

Re: Maxima vs. Sentra

I doubt it says that you can use 89 gas in the manual. It probably says something like "use unleaded fuel only" and they thought it means they can use any unleaded fuel.

I just went to take a look at my co-workers 03 maxima and it says to use premium 91 octane. it smelled like BS to me too.
Dude seriously your parents went from 0 to 3000 miles using the wrong gas, thats the motors break in period, ITS FUCKING CRUCIAL!
instead of breaking it in they simply broke it! keep the 2.5 dude, seriously.

Re: Maxima vs. Sentra

that or beat the piss out of it and break it so they'll replace the engine under warranty. you've 33,000 miles left of your powertrain warranty, so get to beatin' on that thing.

Re: Maxima vs. Sentra

I used the crappiest gas possible in my maxima for a great length of time, and then within the last 25,000 miles or so, I have been using 91 octane(best stuff they have available here for us california folks)...trust me, the difference is like night and day...if you really wanna whoop ass in a rolling race, start from about 20 mph in 1st gear or about 50 mph in 2nd gear, that is when the variable intake really comes into play, and I guarantee the thing will put you back in your seat...if I ever lost to an automatic 2.5 sentra in my car, I would drive it off a cliff....with myself inside.

well i didnt lose to the sentra it wasnt really even a race..i mean we only did a few sprints b/c we were in a 30 mph zone.if anything the sentra could have got the jump and a little head start and would be many lenghts behind by 3rd gear.

today i was goin 25 and floored it real quick and it downshifted nicely into 1st gear and snapped my head back and gave me a lil torque steer.
and another time goin 35 and i punched it for a sec. and i went up to 50 quick and did the same..but sometimes it just doesnt downshift right and it feels slow.

dont drive off a cliff if a sentra does beat u.b/c it is very possible.

Litsen...There is something wrong man if you didn't dust him...A maxima is like a 6 second to 60mph car... a 2.5 sentra is like a 9 second one..

no wonder you're car's not running up to it's potential. you could be down like 50-70 hp.
stop using that shitty gas, your car is pinging, you're gonna fuck up the cylinder walls and have shitty compression. you were given a nice car, treat it properly. that engine didn't make it on Ward Automotive's Best engine's 10 years in a row for no reason.
That is what I was thinking, definitely sounds like detonation.

Re: Maxima vs. Sentra

fortunately our engines will retard timing to avoid detonation, but either way it's most likely the gas accounting for the lack of performance.

So when you scan the Maxima do you have a KR parameter? When the pcm/ecu recognizes detonation it pulls timing and increases the Knock Retard correct? This is how it happens with GM's OBDII.

If you are getting any Knock retard wouldn't there already have to be some level of detonation for the knock sensors to pick up? However small it may be, it still could cause some damage over time.

what nissan's use is a knock sensor. when it senses small knocks, it will pull timing backing back.

however the 05 max that i've driven, it was still knocking. this means that its soo bad, that the computer could not pull back enough timing for the knock to go away.

Re: Maxima vs. Sentra

^the knock sensors are a known problem in the VQ35. i had mine recalled and repaired under warranty maybe the 05 you drove had a failing one. either way that sucks

ok it wasn't real races just short sprints, the maxima is not a 6 sec 0-60 car. the sentra is around 8. the maxima is like 7(4 speed) in a short sprint yes he pulled on me a little, why b/c he had a jump and he held it in 1st,i wasnt ready so i just floored it and probably got into sec. as i notice i wasnt goin as fast as i should.and plus we shut that race down at 50.

the first time we started at 20 and went only to 65 and i ripped on him pretty bad cuz we both had it in 1st and did a 3 honk go.

of course u can get a slower car to take off on u in a better gear get a jump and take the lead for a few seconds.if we woulda took that to 70 i would have left him behind.
