Re: b16b

The B16A automatic transmission came on some Del Sol SiR's in Europe. Del Sol years in Europe were from '92-'98. Not entirely sure if they had the automatic B16A transmission in Japan (though it would seem reasonable), but I know they had them in Europe.

That should give you somewhat of a starting point.

There was a JDM Automatic B16A as well as a European one. As for a "d-sereis vtec head swap," you are refering to a "mini-me conversion, sticking a D16Z6 head on your non-vtec d-series block. You'll need the Vtec ecu from an auto tranny EX too. Or yuou could swap in an auto D16Z6 and ecu, your tranny should bolt up, as d-series trannies are pretty interchangable.

A JDM or Euro B16A is the easiest B-series auto swap you can perform. A B18B1 auto tranny swap IS possible. A LOT of work goes into it, I don't recommend it. The tranny is too big for the frame rail, the car isn't wired for the teg's electronically controled auto tranny. At any rate, if they know what they are getting into, the cost will be more than doing a swap and auto-manual conversion. It is FAR easier to do a auto-manual conversion and swap in a manual b-series than attempt that. If you really want and have to have an auto b-series, send the time and money to swap in a JDM B16A auto. A decent number of JDM Civic Ferio's (4-door sedans) came with the auto trannies.

BTW, GScivic7, the cheapest I know of labor for an auto-manual tranny swap being quoted for is $600 (of course not including the parts).

we were quoted $400. $400 for labor and $800 for parts. Too damn expensive. Might as sell the car, and spend $1200 more on a newer manual version and begin from there and that's just what he did.

It all depend on the situation. If you had a 93 civic HB with a nice custom Kandy Blue color, nice interior work, suspension and wheels. Selling it and buying a new one that's a manual could get damn expensive when trying to restore it to the same level. That paint job would cost more than the $1200 to convert it to a 5-speed for a GSR. Now by the same token, if this person lives in SoCal and has a stock Teal green 93HB auto, it's a different story. Those things grow on trees down there. By the same measure, if someone lives in an area where body rust is an issue due to salted roads, and the auto tranny is the best condtioned one they find by far, it may be far cheaper (and safer) to do the auto-to-5-speed swap than to buy a 5-speed civic with rust and fix that problem.

All things are not always the same across the board, and you want to be careful not to trade one problem for a bigger one. As with any major prroject, weighting your opinons and not jumping to conculsions is your best bet.

Also on a side note, I have run into places over the years that don't charge too much more to the overall price of a engine swap to do it if the customer is doing it at the same time as a swap.

i am really considering the d16z6 swap. if i were to do that would i be able to use the turbo kits designed for that engine regardless of my auto transmission?

i think that's the route that i'm going to take....now to find a d16z6 with low mileage on it.

Re: b16b

the auto tranny can't handle much torque before shitting on you. You can always get it built by Level 10.
