Re: K&N AIR FILTER

[quote=Mr. Peabody]Didn't you have to reprogram your computer after putting the headers?

No. I just put the headers on and the performance was noticeable. The milage on the hghway on a recent trip was at 21.5 MPG as I recall. I had the exact written down somewhere. That was at an average speed of 75 MPH. I imagine it improves at around the 65 MPH range.

I'm certainly no expert but I just find that hard to believe. You just bolt on the headers & no reprograming is required and just like that...magic?

Are you sure??

Why would it need a re-program? I would think there would only be a small air/fuel ratio change that the computer would easily handle.

I've had K&N in my last two Vettes (with open lids) and a '99 5.3 Sierra. I liked the big sucking sound at WOT but I honestly didn't notice any performance improvement. The AC filters they replaced were always changed before they got dirty so maybe that made some difference. The big advantage to me is the efficiency of filtering and it's the last filter you buy so the 2005 Yukon will get one also.

Ua, ya I'm sure.... I was there when we did it over a 12 pack of Sam Adams in my garage. we put them on. It worked. Amazing enough.

Hard to believe? -not me. I dont think its magic because Im not a magician. I just know what headers do. High school auto shop class 101 tells us all that headers are the single best thing one can do to ANY engine...its "free" horsepower and economy. no suprise, no rabbits from a hat. Its physics baby.

From what I understand on the GM generation 3 OBD nearly everything is "automatic". Its not simply a PROM style computer. In otherwords it continually "adjusts" fuel/air ratios. Much smarter and interactive than the older OBD II. So as we add/delete items from the engine and exhaust etc., it knows and adjusts. Kinda like the new oil change light. Its no longer a "dummy" light that simply gose off at 3000 miles. It actually "knows" when you should change the oil based on various conditions. If thats magic, then GM has hired Copperfield.

...hey maybe thats the "magic" you speak of? Im more amazed not by headers, but the fact that these new trucks do not have a fuel filter anymore. No longer can we change our filter every 12,000 miles. NO ONE can tell me why or how this can happen. The manual mentions nothing about a fuel filter anymore. Now thats magic!!

...Oh -will the south rise again? I hope not. I would hate to see NASCAR take over baseball as the national pastime!

It's not magic, GM took it out of sight and put it in your tank so that it's one more thing you'll think twice about before doing it yourself.

I know...its sad isnt it? F*'ing engineers think up some of the most stupid stuff. Why on earth would any manufacture do that?! That is THE single biggest gripe I have about this truck. FOR YEARS I replaced my own fuel filter every year or so from my 73 chevy pickup to the 02 delali. A clean fuel filter is as vital as an oil change (Well, I now change my oil every 6000 or so; thank God for synthetic....and even then thats probably too soon). Anyway, not even the manual says boo about fuel filter. Talks about the windshield whiper fluid but nada on fuel fitler. Amazing. Some butt hole at the dealer said that its "a lifetime" filter to never be replaced. Really? I find that very hard to believe. Clean fuel is important to high pressure FI engines. I still dont know what I will do about a "filter"?

Who is the dumbass engineer that put the filter in tank anyway? I want him shot.

Ah that really does sound like a significant improvement from the obdII in my 96. I would think that if I just bolted long headers on, the damn "check engine" light would come on and probably even start flashing.

As to the dumbass engineer and the fuel filter in the tank? Probably the son of the dummy who put the fuel pump inside of the tank to begin with in such a way that you have to completely remove the tank to replace the pump!!

Ya - the old OBD I and II required a "reprogram". If not, everything went haywire and the check enine light would come on as you say.

Re: K&N AIR FILTER

Just purchased Hypertech's PPIII on ebay last week. When item arrives, I'll test out for myself. I may post an update later.

*Stock Stats*
0-60mph time: 9.2 seconds
Max MPG (city): 312 (gas light came on) (agressive driving)
Max MPG (hwy): 365 (gas light came on) (cruise @ 80mph)

**Note: Upon applying wide open throttle (stock config), there seems to be lack of "high torque feeling" in the low RPM band. Will this improve (at least slightly) with reprogramming.

Re: K&N AIR FILTER

Just put on my filter and setup last night and took it out and punched it - Man it never punched like that before! Whoo Baby! It was great. I can't wait to see how it respondes on fuel etc. I am now just looking for the pipe that leads from the filter area (right after the sensor) up directly into the intake manifold so I can get rid of that plastic piece in front of the engne. Any ideas?.

Re: K&N AIR FILTER

bcopeland...

Are you referring to changing out entire air intake setup (OEM) for an aftermarket setup (K&N's FIPK)? I wanted to change that, but just swapped the filter. My Yukon sucks in more air, and seems to have a bit more jolt to it, but I'm still awaiting the arrival of my PPIII. Hope to see in today or tomorrow. *drewlling* :-P
