Re: Replacing spark plugs on a Mercedes McLaren SLR

Hmmmmm, Subaru 360:
1: pull off plug wires
2: unscrew sparkplug #1
3: unscrew the other splarkplug
4: replace in opposite order.

While you're at it, you might as well rebuild the top end too.

Re: Replacing spark plugs on a Mercedes McLaren SLR

wow how much will it cost to pay a mechanic to do all of that blindside? I bet it costs as much as my car alone.

Re: Replacing spark plugs on a Mercedes McLaren SLR

Chevy V8 (early 70's)

1. open hood
2. remove spark plug wire
3. remove spark plug
4. install new plug
5. replace plug wire
6. close hood

and finally ....
7. watch out for on-coming, fast moving highway traffic

This is a true story ... I had to replace a spark plug while driving Highway 401 from Toronto, Ontario, Canada to London, Ontario, Canada.

Nope, 100% true. Work instructions straight out of WIS (Werkstattininformationsystem) which is our online (offline version also available) vehicle manual.

As for how long it takes to do the job, no labor times are given for the SLR at the moment, kind of like how no parts prices are given. If I were to guess, I'd say the job would take around 20 hours. I also heard that the SLR labor is going to be straight time, not flat rate, so however long it takes the tech to do the job is how much Merc is going to pay. But that's just a rumor, who the hell knows?

Re: Replacing spark plugs on a Mercedes McLaren SLR

Mine ain't so bad....

1984 Toyota Van

Lift driver's seat engine hood.
Remove center console.
Remove passenger seat.
Remove seatbelt buckle.
Fold back the carpet.
Unbolt the entire access panel.
Move access panel aside.
Disconnect spark plug wires.
Remove spark plugs and tubes.
Lubricate rubber gasket on tubes.
Insert new spark plugs in tubes.
Reinsert tubes and plugs back into the cylinder head.
Reconnect plug wires in correct order.

Then figure out how to get the damn thing back together.

jeez if it's that many instructions, just to replace the stupid sparkplugs. Why not just build another engine from scratch .

aaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahaha I dunno why, but that made me laugh... a lot... teeheeeeeeeee.... reminds me of my old sol... I'd go in to get a rotate/balance done, and they'd be like "umm.. we looked around cause something didn't look right... and yeah your entire front/rear suspension needs replacing... here's the estimate." *looks at $1950 worth of estimate.... looks back at Bill*

Funny you should mention a flat tire!

Here's a little exerpt about the SLR from our "Customer Service Insider" magazine thing we get:

A Flat Tire Will Most Likely Require a Tow

"Because the SLR cannot be jump-started and towing requires special considerations, the only roadside assistance available to the owner is the delivery of gas. There is no room for a spare, and the additional weight would slow it down, so the SLR has none. A pump and sealant are provided for emergencies but in most cases a flat tire will require a tow. Since the SLR's suspension is inaccessible for towing, it must be harnessed by its wheels and requires very delicate handling using specially approved equipment."

Re: Replacing spark plugs on a Mercedes McLaren SLR

So, when the SLR gets a flat, you call in one of your helicopters to airlift the thing back to a garage, so they can drop the engine out, remove the suspension, strip out the interior and repaint the bodyshell so they can change the tyre?
