Re: Forget the E60 M5
Or if 612 hp isn't good enough for you, just get an SLR.
And if you don't believe in Mercedes' technology, then how about a supercharged V8 that produces 625 hp and 780 lb/ft of torque. Repeat "V8" |

Re: Forget the E60 M5
Look, Cassie wasnt really being offensive in his research, and neither was TypeS...However I think it is escalating to a BMW Vs. Merc Thread. When comparing the two cars, the merc is faster, the bimmer is cheaper, the bmw is toping on it's numbers for engine, and the merc has more status. Now thats my 2cents.

Re: Forget the E60 M5
Yeah, and I don't even have anything against either car maker. The M3 and M5 are some of the nicest cars. I'd actually rather drive the M5 than benzes $120K SL600, which is a 4 door luxury car with a around 500 hp engine.

ahhh yes, the everlasting power argument! car companies downrate the horsepower on certain models to a certain degree. for example, the srt-4 is proly running close to 260 hp stock considering dyno numbers that i have seen. the nissan skyline (r34) is widely believed to be making more than its conservative 280 horsepower. moving onto the target vehicles, bmw sixes are very underrated, in my opinion, because they can put up acceleration numbers that dont seem right for their horsepower. a 225 330ci manual doing a 0-60 in 5.8 seems pretty fast for the weight and power the car has (a g35 manual coupe w/290-295 hp-more hp for 2005-runs about a 5.5).
the mercedes sl600 and the sl55 suposedly have almost the same hp ,according to the factory, but, there are people out on benz forums who have dynoed their sl600's and they are producing nearly as much hp as the car is rated for at the crank. another example is when mercedes recently ungraded its hp numbers on the e55 to 500 b/c test showed that it was much too underrated. car makers do downgrade hp numbers for insurance (albeit considering the money needed to buy such cars in the first place, insurance shouldnt b and issue) and similar reasons. one still gets the power that the car actually, and if they dyno it they can tell others about the real hp numbers w/o paying for them. p.s. the engine in the sl65 can go much higher in terms of both hp and torque. mercedes had to scale back the torque because the transmission couldn't support it. in case anybody is wondering, i once owned a mercedes c36 (bought in 96-sold in 2000) and a bmw m3 (e36-bought in 2000-sold in 2002 *wasnt happy w/that one, but thats another story*). i hope this helps the discussion, i would love to talk about the issue more

Why not just get a Turbocharged GSX1000RR (Superbike)
...thats like 300+HP with like 500+ lbs (including you) run 7's all day for like $12,000...... But......................... As for these cars, I think what Highrev said was perfectly right. |

Re: Forget the E60 M5
^ treynor's Supra, M5, and 1000+HP RT/10 Viper (at certain points - had to reduce for streetability) are all sold. The F355 he bought for his dad (in the picture).
"All" he has left are the SRT-10 Viper (wife's car), the S600 (he calls it his boring family sedan - run's 11's), and the recently-purchased SL65 (11's at 125+ stock). Ben has a boring life.

Re: Forget the E60 M5
Ha, didn't even know that. I was watching these videos.
The best one is when he takes out the 1000 hp viper for a ride and this audi tries to race him. 60-110 mph in 3 seconds. http://www.treynor.com/DragRaces.html |

As was said before they do cater to totally different buyer. For regular driving I think the SL65 would be my choice. Mercedes tends to have more plush interiors, and the powerband is very wide. The torque on the new M5 is around 380@ 6500 rpms while the mercedes is nearly twice that at a lower rpm. It also has an automotatic.
The M5 on the other hand would be the car you take out to really drive. With such a high revving engine, and a 7 speed manual tranny, and I would think a stiffer suspension it would be a totally different ride. If I had to choose though I'd take the mercedes myself, but thats just because I dont really like the new styling on the bimmers.
