Re: hard to start
Isn't there a timing advance wire that has to be disconnected on these trucks to time them properly?
Brown and beige wire going from the ECM under the glove compartment? |

Re: hard to start
Hello
Wow a carb Well this still hold true to carbs also Long crank times 9 out of 10 times = lack of fuel. After the truck sits for a long time I want you to go to the carb and look down it while moveing the throttle (engine off) is there any fuel spray???. The fuel pump could be back feeding the fuel out of the carb or the float in the carb is bad or the needle and set are bad not letting the right amount of fuel into the carb. I have seen base gaskets go bad and they suck a lot of air in and run lean. Grab the carb with both hands and try to move it twist it.Is this a auto trans or 5 speed .Timming different for autos and standerds. Yes timing decal is on the fan shroud Post what you find and we will go from there Fireplug |

Re: hard to start
Hold on here, the man said he changed the timing to 10 BTDC. If he didn't disable the advance, he's timed wrong.
I'm not sure if the '83 had an ECM that would adjust timing or not, it's right around the changeover years, OR if it's vacuum advance. He should check the distributor and see if it's vacuum or not and then retime accordingly. Since he said that it has less power since he timed it, it sounds as if he has retarded it too much. |

Re: hard to start
ok i checked the carb, witht the truck OFF i moved the throttle and there was no fuel spray i turned the key on cuz i figured the fuel pump would turn on and fuel would pray in the carb but nope. i sprayed carb cleaner al around the base and the carb and there is no change in idle. the carb does not twist or move. its a 5 speed. the is no vacuum on the distributor. its an 84 not an 83. were would i disconect the ecm if i had one?

Re: hard to start
Does this truck have a CARB or TBI ? I have to know this before we can move on.
TBI has 2 fuel injectors at the top of the unit with wires connected to them.If its a TBI you can move the throttle cable all day and no gas will spray with out the engine running. A Carb has no fuel injectors but has a accelerator pump that sprays fuel when the throttle cable is moved. This type will spray fuel into the carb untill the float bowl runs out of gas. So PLEASE tell me do you have a CARB or TBI??? These are 2 different types of systems. |

Re: hard to start
If you do not have a vacuum pot on the bottom of the distributor then you have an ECM. Hmmmm, I think it is behind the glove box but if you pull your carpet up on the passenger side, you should see a small connector with only one wire, It might be brown or beige, sometimes with a white tracer, have also seen it on the pink side, But the plug is unmistakable, about 5/16" square. Unplug this, do your base timing and then reconnect.
If it is vacuum, pull the vacuum line and plug the hose, do your base timing and reconnect the vacuum hose. I think you said that this was a V6, if it is and while your doing the base timing, after you have timed on #1 cylinder, move the pickup of the timing light to #4 cylinder and see how close it is to the mark that #1 was on. Your checking for timing chain stretch. |

Re: hard to start
Hotwheelstg
OK now you are sure its a carb RIGHT. So you have your answer to your problem ok i checked the carb, witht the truck OFF i moved the throttle and there was no fuel spray (if it is a carb this is part of the problem you must have fuel spray with out the truck running if you move the throttle cable it MUST spray fuel or the carbs float bowl is empty )) i turned the key on cuz i figured the fuel pump would turn on and fuel would pray in the carb but nope ( this set up has a mechanical pump not an electric in tank pump. We need to find out why you have no fuel the long crank times and the back fire are due to a lean problem. We together on this. Its NOT A EMC OR TIMING problem at least for now. |
