I vote for PS.

"professional" is a term best defined by the buyer.

It is defined by your design boss. The way you present your design ideas, not the designs themselves. I can't see how a design is professional/unprofessional. Wait, yes I can... GM.

Re: 4x4 Sketch...

lolol

let me clarify then....buyer is who ever is paying you.

The company I work for pays me to draw. My boss "is" my buyer.

Regardless it all comes down to what's on the paper....not how it got there.

Once again this is purely opinion. My experiences have helped shape this point of view. TYour experiences help shape yours. It's all good.

Ps isn't proffesional then? http://www.cardesignnews.com/studio/...ng/index2.html <- that looks proffesional to me.

I think you just need to make your renders more exciting Gamsaleh.

Re: 4x4 Sketch...

Hey, thanks guys. It's only a sketch... I didn't go in depth with it.

ra, ross, thanks for that tute. that is one of the best yet. the car is awesome. and the technique is simple, easy for beginners: layer-only buildup without using masks or channels or other shyt that i don't understand yet.

First thing, notice hw on the final product, there aren't ANY original lines from the sketch. It has all been layered with the airbrush and other tools. This may sound a bit primitive, but I personally don't think "colouring in" a drawing in PS is professional. The CDN tutorial is not colouring in, it is completely redoing the drawing in PS. Notice how most of that is hard without a Wacom.

Quote: "This gives a more spontaneous effect and is quick."
Hah. I think that a regular marker drawing does the same thing, no?

Here's the truth. I feel really egotistical and self centred admitting this, but here is why I'm against PS. The only way I am going to make it to any design college, anywhere in the world, is with huge scholarships/sponsorships. My family will never be able to afford such an expensive education. The only way for me to get a sponsorship is to have a good hand. If I can draw really good, I can become a car designer, my lifetime dream. I CAN'T afford Alias, Rhino or whatever. That is why I am personally trying to pretect my only way into the business. I don't want the sketchers to be locked out from spots in the industry to rich Cali boys who got their mommies and daddies to get them into ACCD. They already will have had Alias/Wavefront experience for 5 years, because they could afford it. That's pretty much it.

Alternatively, I'm not calling all of you "rich Cali boys", that's just the label I put on that crowd of people that get what they want.

"Stop crying and get a job". Well buddy, 10K$US a semester is hard to wrok off.

I also like the look of a properly hand rendered piece than a PS rendered one.

i must agree with you, ansisk. i have started using PS for jobs, too. it is only a tool. it is good to have your portfolio spread out across mediums. it will only help to have a few PS samples. but i prefer hand-drawn/rendered stuff ANY day. i am the preacher for that cause. but PS is here to stay. and is only another tool for the trick bag.

as for the software --well, there are 'ways' to get that stuff. y'know what i mean? i've also met some pretty mediocre artists who went to Art Center. i think the place is great, but vastly over rated. i would not pay to go there. i'd go to some other industrial design school locally. there are others. Art Center is not the only farm school for detroit.

Re: 4x4 Sketch...

Hey AnsisK,

You can do it all. You have great passion, maybe you can find the way to get that look you're after in a digital format. PS isn't the only computer tool available. I've seen wonderful work in Painter as well as unbelievable 3-D work.

You have great potential...grow with it. If you close doors to yourself you never know what you might miss.

I'm not an Adobe representative or anything I'm just an old guy who makes his living selling art. It's a big big playing field....seriously. I don't do the type of work that Chad does, but I recognize the value in his methods, and the professionalism in his craft. I have respect for his methods though they differ from mine. I hope to learn from him and everyone else on this board...no matter the technique.

Your work is good let's see some more.

Re: 4x4 Sketch...

oh also I like many many artists drawn by hand scan and then render. I know many techniques that allow you to color and maintain your pencil pen brush or whatever.

I might venture to guess that you haven't actually worked in PS.

PM me.....I think I can help you (only you) get a copy. No strings. (I've actually been licensed through Adobe since 2000...so in that sense I might be a rep....I learned PS on version 2.5 before layer effects and all the built in stuff.) Seriously if cost is your only barrier ......

Re: 4x4 Sketch...

as stated, try Painter. that is even more organic and traditional than PS. i may even start using that myself. lots and lots of conceptual work is done with Painter and PS in the film industry. not hand-drawn. but you can attain a traditional look with it.

what is alluring about digital is it's ease of revision. you can revise and revise and revise and keep revising quickly. this is great for production work because concepts change up until the last moment before shooting very often.

Re: 4x4 Sketch...

as for me, i never see quitting hand-drawing ever. never. i will at least sketch it and scan it. don't care how cybernetic life becomes. i'm staying drawing until my last breath.
