Does it bounce violently or very slowly over a minute or two.

Re: Feul gage bounces only in park

You see, when you put a vehicle in park you have just come to a stop right?

Also, when you get into a vehicle, the truck will lightly rock from side to side as you climb into the driver's seat.

Both scenarios lead to the small amoutn of fuel left in your tank at that level to slosh back and forth a bit until it has been still and can settle.

When I come to a stop light with a low amount of fuel, the level of the tank can be seen to chage as the fuel is forced to the front while stopping.

As said before, this is completely normal and you cannot compare this sending unit doing to the last one that did not.

Remember, the last sending unit was defective so it is not exactly a good comparative sample.

When my '97 LS gets low on fuel- about 3/4 full, the gauge goes all the way to full even when the tank is empty and I get stranded in podunkville, which is where these POS sending units were made. Not to mention the windshield wipers only work in dry wheather. When it rains, they don't work.

I missed out on the special bulletin (wiper) by 2 months, so I'll have to replace that and the fuel pump myself before I try to unload the thing. (Not in a hurry to sell it, and definately not in a hurry to spend $400 for the fuel pump, and $60 for the wiper cover unit)

GM-Chevy customer service sent me a nice letter stating they're not responsible for mail notices that don't reach the intended receipient,so don't bother us again with your piddly complaints. (I'm the original owner on the truck, it only has 32K miles, and has been recalled 3 other times for upper ball joints, seat belts, and fire-prone door mirrors.

Re: Feul gage bounces only in park

don't get the repair done at a Chevy dealership.

US$500 for an installed sending unit is too expensive. Check around for better prices.

The prices I gave are my part costs ($335 for the pump at NAPA, $58.00 for the wiper motor cover from Chevy). The dealer will add anothe 25-50% onto NAPA's part cost.

As I said, I'll eventually do the repairs myself, I'm not about to give my local dealer $90.00/hour labor charges which would add another $300.00 onto the price. There should be a recall on this, as it can be a safety hazard.(I've filed my compaint with the NHTSA, my gauge hasn't worked going on three years.)

Numerous posts in this forum about people paying over $600.00 to get their fuel gauges working through the stealer/dealers.
This particular model has the sending unit integrated into the pump, the sending unit as a separate piece is not available.

Re: Feul gage bounces only in park

Ouch, they are expensive.

Can't you just pop a used one in? I would.

Sure could. That's always a possibility, but unlikely for me. I only drive the truck in winter or rainy wheather, so using the trip meter to estimate fill-up time is ok for me.(Did I mention the crappy-wipers-dont-work-when-it-rains symptom)

Eventually my daughter will get this vehicle (needs to go another 4 months on the temp license, can't drive by herself until that period is up), and this is when I'll probably install a new unit. (Dad, I need $5.00 for gas - that'll screw up the trip meter method)

I'd hate to put a used pump in only to have the same problem. After all, I don't want to be dropping the fuel tank on a regular basis. The truck is in very good condition, so I'll opt for new parts to keep it that way and continue to complain about the poor customer service from Chevy.

OK, I'm done ranting.
Mike

Re: Feul gage bounces only in park

For one, don't get your service done at the dealership.

Use a private garage and save big money. They are all mechaincs.
