Huh? Why not 776.9999999? THAT is close as can be but not yet there. 666 is 111 away from 777!!
O, God your dense . 776.9999999 is not saying 6 three times is it? remember, in bible times, saying something 3 times was the most infactic way to say anything. Like saying 'Holy, holy, holy', that's as holy as you get. is it sinking in yet. Plus, they didn't know about decimals back then.

Hmm...I'm the dense one, yet you have managed to spell "emphatic" without the "E" or the "PH". It actually took me several seconds to figure out what you were attempting to say. Maybe we better stick to two syllables from now on, hmmm??
Further, they started using decimals around 3000b.c. In biblical times decimals most certainly WERE around.

Congrats to you, 2 spelling errors and technicallity. It's a none issue, the point is that 6 is as close to 7 as you can get, decimals not included. it's like being in 2nd place, it only makes you the first place loser, get it? saying it 3 times makes it as emphatic as you can get. thus, 666, as close to perfect as you can get without being there, decimals not included. 1st place loser's.

I am failing to see how "almost perfect but not quite" is equal to "the EVIL EVIL MARK OF SATAN".
Don't think for one second that you only had that spelling error...I only pointed it out because it was the dumbest.

Well, you remind of a friend I have. Anyway, I was just explaining the history behind the number. I look at my post a little closer. I also said its the mark of the beast. That's why there's so much bad karma around it. It's just a number for the moment, no hex's. I would of thought someone as well thought as you would of seen that part. My explaination is just why that number was used. So, really its "the EVIL EVIL MARK OF THE BEAST", not satan

Re: 666?

ok i think what is trying to be said here is this:

Assume for a moment that 7 is the "perfect number." For whatever reason, if its prime or whatever. The closest tangible number (integer) to 7 is 6. Why not 8? Because if 7 is God's number (i.e. 7 days of creation), then 8 would be a number higher than God and therefore could not exist for the purposes of this discussion.

If we go by this whole superstitious Saying Things Three Times Makes Them Magic theory, 777 would be the Magic Perfect Number. Accordingly, 666 would be a 3x repetition of the number CLOSEST to being the most powerful/perfect (7). So, 666 really is a way of saying something that tries to be God, but can never be perfect and thereby fails. Maybe this translates to the devil or something?

my

Thank you kcap122, that's the closest anyone has gotten to what I'm saying. Satan betrayed God b/c he wanted to be higher than God. But he never got there. Also, being almost perfect is pretty bad. Like half a truth is worse than a lie. Think about it. If saying almost the truth is worse than not saying the truth at all, wouldn't the same be true here?

Reading is good for you.
I suspect that girl is a prissy self-centered attention hound, rather than being afflicted with irrational fears.

Different cultures fear specific numbers for a reason. Many Chinese are afraid of the number 4 because in Cantonese (or Mandarin not sure) the word for four sounds a lot like their word for death. Its common for Chinese people, at least here, to refusehaving a licence plate or street address with the number 4 in it.

As for the Christian west, 13 is unlucky because of...the Last Supper, maybe? (the 13th person betrayed Christ?)

Personally I find this interesting from a sociological and cultural point of view. To be afraid of a number seems to me to be a sign of mental disability.

This is basically what i was going to say, since nobody seemed to be able to hit the nail on the head.

Quote:

It's not the number that people are afraid of, it's what the number represents that people are afraid of, it's the connection between the evils that make people leary.

Quote:
so if you see it in life its just coincidence
It's not always coincidence, unfortunately people write it on purpose without truly understanding what they're doing. Should it occur in a book for example, it's not intended so there's no evil nature that people should fear. Again, it's by association that people react to it.

I think if you slap her, someone will kick your butt from here to there so i don't recommend it. Not trying to be smart, i'm looking out for your interests.
