Re: radio will not shut off when car turned off

Oh and the only thing that will not work if you don;t have your stock unit mounted in the trunk is your door Chime. I posted an explination in another thread about this "rumor" that the stock head unit controlls, the airbags, lights, or what ever else.

Re: radio will not shut off when car turned off

Here is what I posted in another thread for more explination about the Head unit myth.

"I know and seen the articles that started this stupid rumor. It happed to a guy in california that didn't follow GM's recommended Airbag power-down procedure for the airbags. The airbags will hold a charge up to 15 min after the battery is disconected. So this tool crossed a wire and the bags blew him into the back seat.

I had a local shop tell me the same thing when I bought mine. I waited for this "harness" that was supposed to come out from Soundgate (www.soundagte.com) and it was taking forever. So I called and talked to a sound gate tech. Basically if you remove your stock head unit the only thing that won't work is your door chime. NOTHING else is controlled though the head unit. Now when I did mine the only thing was they didn;t have a harness for it to hook up to the factory plugs yet but that was solved with using the 94 buick harness (can't remember off the top of my head if thats the right year) and all you have to do is add a 12v Ingnition Wire.

Man some of the "myths" I'm reading about these cavs on this forum I havn't seen in about 2 and a half years......"

If you read the owners manual it says why the stereo stays on. It is called RAP. Retained Accessory Power. I am not sure about the time limit, but I think that it is 10 minutes that some of the power accessories, including the stereo will stay on.

#1 I don't have a owners manual for my car. If I did i'd fucking read it.

#2 I had the aftermarket cd player installed long before i found these forums. Plus I'm not the type of person to risk having something else mess up for not doing what ALL car audio shops said i should do. Even if it is just the chimes.

#3 Its mounted in my trunk because thats what i was told they had to do. I went to every audio store around...all said the same thing. Not a big deal actually...you can't see it unless you are really looking for it.

If its a factory radio take it to a dealer and tell them to fix it. If its an after market unit then you need to hook it up right.

As for the specific wires I really can;t tell you with out doing it myself beccause its not like they have a huge lable on them that says "use this wire"

All I do know is Something is wrong and its not "just the way it is"

Umm...HATE TO BREAK IT TO YOU, but your Cavy is a 2001 model, did you say??? Dumbass!! I was talking about the 2000 MODEL Cavy's you dummy! When they made the 2000 model Cavy's, they f*cked up with the radio not turning off when you opened the door. It shut off after 10 minutes in the 2000 Cavy's....WE'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT THE 2001 CAVY'S DUMBASS!

Re: radio will not shut off when car turned off

im guessing that the problem is that the button that pushes in when the door is open must be sticking, i suggest locating the button... (its on the perimitor of the door somewhere! and seeing if indeed it needs some wd40 on it

NO - thats NOT what we're talking about.

And as for that link....it IS HELPFUL, however...when I was wiring in my radio's for my 2000 Cavalier....I NEVER had to do anything with the airbag wires or shut the airbag off or anything! I was ALWAYS able to remove my dash with ease, and take out the radio and put in my new one.

well curbie.. now you could be wrong! just you think about it.. what would happen if the sensor thought the door was still closed? the interior light wouldnt turn on and... the radio wouldnt go off when you opened the door.

Angry

The radio is supposed to stay on for about 10 minutes after turning the engine off IF you DO NOT open the driver’s door.

So, when i pull the key out of the ignition AND open the driver’s door the factory radio which is out of warranty stays on - I have to power off manually.

Anyone know what could be wrong?

First off Internet muscles are great when you know your not going to run into the person. Buy my calculations you are pretty built on the internet and people must back down and get scared of you.

Second Both years do the same thing asshole. Mine stays on for 10 min then shuts off.

Third Lenkos site explains it to a T.

Have Fun.

It sounds like somthing is wrong with the 12v ignition wire like i stated prior. Wether thats a door sensor attached to it or not I wouldn;t beable to tell. Best bet is to take it to the dealership. THEY will not tell you that is normal because it isn't

Dude no one said anything about shutting the airbag off. EVERYONE stated the proper Power-down for the airbag so you don't accidently gournd somthing out or crass a wire and accidently cause them to deploy. Yes you can rip the dash off and go to town with out anything happening, BUT this is an extra step GM put out to prevent accidental discharge of the airbags.
