Re: does the cavalier have a speed limiter ?
I don;t know about the second Generations but if you have a 95+ j-body no matter what trim, motor or whatever its governed at 108 like previously said. Only way to get it past 108 without doing the VVS mod is to be going down hill on somthing like a state highwya and it hits the govoner. The motor cuts but if you have enough momentum you can hit 109 or 110.........lol
The 2nd generation cavs should be goverened also just don;t know the exact speed. maybe 110. But not anymore. reason is as stated the car is not ment to handle that speed and unless you have suspension, brake, and wheel upgrades. And I'm not refering to buying better all season tires, premuin OEM brak liners, and cutting your springs either. |

Re: does the cavalier have a speed limiter ?
me and my friend where running the 1/4 mile..and then decided to see how fast it would go...and my car shuts off just past 110 mph..which is hella fast for a cav...but soon it will change and will go faster than that.
Speed dont kill, its the sudden impact that does.

Re: does the cavalier have a speed limiter ?
So far, I've only had it to 90. Wasn't really trying, just legged it out a little, and it hit 90 quite easily. I'm sure the car will go faster than that, but I can see where a few mods would make it a bit more stable at speed.
I can also see where GM thought it was a good idea to put a limiter in. I've hit the limiter in my van a couple of times, and that was definitely faster than the van should be driven on a regular basis. |

i cant even count how many times ive hit the governor in my car, 108 in 4th gear is somewhere around 5100 rpms so i dont even get to shift into 5th before it kicks in

Re: does the cavalier have a speed limiter ?
My good ol' second gen wil go from 75 to 100 pretty easily, that last 8-10 mph isn't as easy, but it will do it. I went to Knoxville last week (220mi RT) and did about 85 most of the way, I get a little uneasy going faster than that, for long periods of time. I hadn't hit the gov in a while, and there was no one around so I figured what the hell. I punched it and it took about 15 seconds to hit 110 and I slowed it back down to 85. Man 110 is really haulin' compared to the usual 80, and much more dangerous if something catastrophic happens, hence the uneasy feeling past 85. There's nothing you can do to save it at those speeds, even Mario Andretti himself couldn't keep it on the road if a tire blew. RIP Andy Filson.
You all do know what happens when you hit the rev limiter or speed governor, don't you? It cuts off the fuel injectors until it slows back down. You all know what happens when you run an engine lean, very bad things. I know hitting it once or twice for a second or two isn't going to cause any problems, immediatly, but if you make it a habbit you will have problems down the road. So don't go crazy bouncing off the rev limiter and governor every day. Keep it safe guys!
