Re: Cicadas!!!!!!!

In Northern Virginia we have (on average) 1 million per acre. Our in the styx (where I live) I can't hear anything aside from them. We only get them every 17 years though so it's not that bad. But my internet is down at home so this is the only place I can get online sometimes so I have no distractions from them.

I hate these damn bugs.

Cicadas in our area can easily be divided into two groups according to when they occur; those that appear every year (or annually) from the end of June to the middle of October and those that do not appear every year, but occur every13 or 17 years (or periodically) generally from the middle of May to the middle of June. There is also a difference in their appearance. Annual cicadas vary in size from a ¼ of an inch to almost three inches in size. They tend to be black, brown and green and have a green coloration along their wing margins. The periodical cicadas are generally all black with red eyes and orange wing margins and are generally an inch in length. Periodical and annual cicadas would rarely occur at the same time. Some annual species can begin calling as early as mid-June here in the Mid-Atlantic, however most species tend to call as individuals and not the famous huge chorus that the periodicals are known for. The annual cicadas would only begin to call after all the periodical cicadas have died off.
There's a bit more info for you Raz Kaz.

Thanks for the info. I still find it weird that they have 2 different kinds of these same insects. One that shows up yearly and the other once every 17 years. Only difference being theuir appearance. Still, not so scary looking as that wolf spider or the camel spider...

Re: Re: Cicadas!!!!!!!

Cicadas aren't scary at all, anyone who is scared of em are prissy sissys. One of my co-workers is so prissy that she couldn't enter the building b/c there were a bunch at the door.

Yea there are a bunch here, they are a nuisance. just right outside my work one women was talking on her cell phone, one cicada flew into her mouth LOL. She spit it out and started gaggin. They also like to stick to your tires for some reason, my cousin smooshed one on my car and the guts were all white, an hour later it became real white and a big area of my tires looked nasty, had to clean the gunk off.

Re: Re: Re: Cicadas!!!!!!!

I read an article that was particularly amusing about how cicadas are dangerous to children, it included descriptions of how kids often get injured running away from them or trying to kill them.
A few things that I remembered was a kid running into a wall trying to get away from a flying cicada, a kid chopping his toes off, trying to put one under a lawnmower, and a kid getting his hand smashed, when he tried to put one under the wheels of a moving car. Kids are dumb aren't they?
