Re: What are the basic mods for $1000 for a dx 93 hatchback?

What things can i do to the suspension on my hatchback, i read the list from the link that one guy posted, but i still don't know what coilovers are, and what they do. Are they the big spring looking thing? How much do adjustable shocks cost and what are the biggest rims that will fit the dx? Thanks for caring.

two types of coilovers, true coilovers and sleeve type coilovers. Sleeve coilovers are like ground controls and skunk2's. it's a spring sitting on an adjustable perch. That way you can raise and lower your car at will. A true coilover is a spring with a threaded shock body with which the perch adjusts itself on. Like the Tein units. IMO, best bang for the buck is the Tein SS coilover. You want to also look into new bushings, rear sway bar and front and rear strut tower bars. That should stiffen you up quite a bit. Near go-kart like handling.

The biggest I have seen someone fit without modification has been 18" wheels. With performance in mind I wouldn't go over a 16" unless you can get your hands on some really lightweight 17's.

dont get sleeve type coilovers very bad things have happen and if u cant put down 850$ for a true coilover mayb just go with a spring wiht some nice struts(struts and shocks are the same thing pretty much).for sway bars no point in upgrading the front swaybar only the rear. new bushings are good too.

I'll spend what i have on the suspension, what are some good lightweight rims? Tires? And with what i have left over, i guess i'll get some small stuff like intake or exhaust, just so i won't feel soo goofy in a lowered car with rims, but with a stock exhaust. So the Tein SS are good? What about cambers and all that? Please explain what struts and swaybars do!!

Doing suspension first is a good idea, there is not need in spending money on things that you will soon have no need for. True coilovers are going to cost you a pretty penny. If you are on a limited budget I'd say (as someone else has also said) go with a nice shock and spring combo.

I have the tokico blues (shocks) with H&R 1.5" drop sport springs, and it is a nice street combo. I didn't notice too much of a road noise increase or much of a difference in ride quality. You may want to go with the H&R race springs (2.5" drop) seeing as you are wanting your car lower. I paid $420.00 for my setup from www.inlinefour.com

Camber will be an issue if you lower your car to any degree. Camber is the the degree of "lean in/lean out" your wheels have.
This will help you visualize it...
The two lines l l will represent your wheels, looking toward the front of your car.

l l = a neutral camber (this is probably what stock height looks like)
/ \ = a negative camber (this is a lowered car looks like)
\ / = a positive camber (this is what happens when people raise trucks)

I believe my camber was -2 and I only lowered my car 1.5". I didn't get a camber kit until I ruined my first set of tires (I learned the hard way). When buying a camber kit don't buy the cheap ones that look like a washer with bolts they are hard to work; I had to beat my wheel well in to make it work. Ingalls has a good reputation and that is what most people use. You'll probably drop around $150.00, but it'll save you money on tires in the long run.

For $1000 dollars you are going to have trouble buying rims and suspension, unless you are willing to sacrifice quality.

Rotas make a strong lightweight rim even though they are cast and not forged. www.jaydm.com for Rota wheels. As for tires, people are going to tell you various things, it's all a matter of preferance. Decent cheap tires would be Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's. The Kumho MX tires are some of the best out there along with Bridgestone S-03 Pole Positions, but those two cost some money.

The Tein SS are great, but cost about $800. A nice spring and shock combo like 91HBSI said will do you if you don't have a lot to spend. H&R or Eibach springs along with Koni Yellows or KYB AGX shocks seem to be really popular lately.

Strut bars and sway bars pretty much tie in the left and right side of your chassis so you don't get chassis flex when you turn in. Front and rear strut bars plus a rear sway bar does wonders. A front sway bar isn't really needed because it will increase understeer and that's something FWD cars have too much of already.

BTW: having bad toe will eat up your tires way before bad camber does. Just something to keep in mind.

Re: What are the basic mods for $1000 for a dx 93 hatchback?

Well, are voxx rims good? My friend is trying to sell some 17's and i was wondering how light they are. I'm sure he'll give me a good deal on them since i've known him forever. Do the camber kits just make the tires go back to the normal neutral posistion? I'm pretty good at not paying full price for stuff, plus i'm really patient, so i guess that may pay off. Thanks for the post, and if you can think of anything else keep it coming.
